Glasgow Barfly 14th August
On the night, support act ‘In Adaras Oceans’ shook the walls of the building, causing chaos and moshpits. The music they make is supercharged with emotion, and not just anger. The tight and technically aggressive sound is occasionally softened as moments of melodic serenity cut in like the sun breaking through the clouds of a particularly violent storm! Somewhat surprisingly, these boys are a real treat for real music lovers of any genre.

YRock Night @ Studio 24

Wednesday 13th August 2008-08-14

Bands:

Nobody’s Heroes
The Escape
Sol
Skitten

Phew…what a day!

After an obscenely last minute mix-up, the night was moved from The Hive (Booooo!) to Studio 24 (Yeaaahhh!) in record time. There may still be people queuing outside The Hive - we don’t know. What we do know is this: Great bands; great turnout; GREAT NIGHT!

First to take to the stage were Skitten. Are they Punk? Are they Indie? Retro? Modern? Are they a bird? Are they a plane? Does anyone really care?!
Wherever they take their influences from it’s clear that these boys mean business. With bags of on-stage energy and an ambitious attitude to boot, these guys are worth looking out for…

Next up was Sol. What a treat. Already proven musicians (one fan described them as a ‘Superband’, referring to the fact that the band had been forged from a bigger rock orchestra - I think). Really strong musicianship from all band members and some really tight arrangements made Sol stand out from the crowd. A sweet but powerful lead vocal carried the songs into the realms of pop, whilst strong and long lead guitar parts reminded me of the old rock ballad era. Make no mistake however; this is a fresh young band with a satisfying and catchy sound.

I don’t think The Escape know how to disappoint a crowd, and last night was no exception. A rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ (I think it was a cover), helped along by the audience and thumping kick drum, set the tone – this was a birthday party with style! Lead singer Roisin’s powerful vocals stole the show, and it’s strangely difficult to take your eyes of her while she’s on stage. The Escape know how to write a catchy chorus, and have forged a style all of their own. A mention must be made to the wonderful Ricky Martin cover; it seemed to bring a lot of people out of the closet. Effortlessly bridging a gap between ambient acoustics and solid rock; I love the Escape.

Headliners Nobody’s Heroes look like they’ve come straight out of an American sitcom; perfectly presented on stage and with a great attitude to their music, just watching them makes you feel like you want to be part of the band. Unfortunately, being about ten years too old I can but imagine what it would be like to be part of such a fun and diverse young group. Opening with a catchy original composition, highlights for me (and the rest of the audience by the looks of it) included covers of Robbie Williams’ ‘Let me Entertain you’, and Amy Winegums’ ‘Valerie’. Some dangerous looking hairstyles (Benji, this means you) coupled with two fiery blonde starlets up front is a winning combination! I’m already looking forward to next time…

YRock. Three hours notice is plenty.

Alryt,
Was a bit gutted about tonight!
But thanks very much for trying to get a different place, Much appreciated.
One month seems a long time lol, But if you manage to get the dog house or any venue that would be great.
If we were ever to play a gig in Glasgow or Endinburgh with use do expenses ever get paid?
See You Soon,
