"Your Mental Health"

How you doing? Eating well? Sleeping well? Most of us have a fair idea about how to look after our physical health but, have you ever done anything to look after your mental health?
We’re looking at different themes to get you thinking about how it can affect your mental health. We’re using polls and quizzes to get you thinking, but there are no right or wrong answers. You can find advice on how to look after your mental health in our slideshow and relevant helplines in the blog.

If you need help right now go to http://yourmentalhealth.ie/support_s...
for places that can help you right away. This page is only moderated a few times a week, so if you need to reach out to someone, please contact one of the organisations listed in the blog like Samaritans.

Your Mental Health says:
"Check out our new polls" (1 week ago) me too!

Loneliness
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been running a poll to see what topics you would like to see us talk about here on Your Mental Health. Thanks for all your suggestions. The topic most people voted for was loneliness, so that’s what we’re going to be looking at for the next while. We have some tips for beating loneliness and some polls to see what you think. Leave a comment and tell us what you think. Maybe you’re feeling lonely and don’t know what to do about it. Or maybe you have some good suggestions to share with people who might be lonely. Let us know what you have to say.
Loneliness
Most of us feel lonely every now and again. You might be shy or find it hard to make friends. Maybe you have started a new school or college, or have moved away from home. Maybe you have fallen out with your friends or broken up with a boyfriend or girlfriend. There are lots of reasons why someone might be feeling lonely. Loneliness can make you feel like you have nobody to share your feelings with and can be bad for your mental health. It is important to realise that there are things you can do about it.
Ways to avoid loneliness
One of the best ways to avoid loneliness and meet new people is to get involved in an activity that you like. Figure out what you are interested in and join a club or organisation which is involved in that activity. It is much easier to talk to people and make friends with people who share your interests. Sign up for a course and learn about something new. Another great way to meet new people is to do some volunteering work. There are lots of charities and groups who need people to help them with their work and volunteering is great way to meet people. There’s lot of information here about volunteering at www.volunteeringireland.ie and on SpunOut.ie at http://www.spunout.ie/health/work/vo... .
Samaritans
Remember, if you need someone to talk to, you can always contact Samaritans on 1850 609090 (from Ireland) or 08457 909090 (Northern Ireland) or email jo@samaritans.org.

Eating Disorders
Many people worry about our weight and size from time to time, and often the mood we are in or the way we are feeling can affect what we eat. However, if this worrying gets obsessive and if you only feel ok when you are controlling your food and body in some way, by cutting down on the amount you eat, binge eating, skipping meals or hiding food, making yourself sick or exercising too much, then a problem is developing. If you are doing any of these things, it could mean that you have an eating disorder. Eating disorders are not about food - they are a way of coping with stress, pressure, distress, feelings and worries that are, for some reason, too hard to express. Eating disorders can be an attempt to gain control when you feel you don’t have any control over your life.

People with eating disorders often believe that life will only get better for them once they have lost weight. They get caught up in a self-destructive cycle so that the more they control the more they need to control in order to feel ok. Eating disorders can be a problem for anyone. Some people think that only girls develop eating disorders but young men make up 10% of people with eating disorders. Eating disorders are very serious and can be life-threatening if they aren’t treated. People with eating disorders can and do recover.

Hi! There are some things I think which should be discussed if you want:
1) Descrimination
Against different religion such as in Ireland if you're Irish and not Christian you're immediately shunned
stereotyping of emos and chavs and other cliques because both are wrong
ageism - because it's not just elderly people who are discriminated against, I have been followed by security guards in shops just for being a teen.

2) Relationships with parents. I know you discussed relatiionships before but at the moment I just feel like everything I do is wrong for them. And I think the respect needs to swing both ways - I just said "I don't going for holidays in my own country" and my dad goes and calls me a snob.

At the moment these two major points have been getting me really down. Maybe something about violence too? I think there's a problem with that in Ireland.

Thanks for reading,
Nee

I'm also losing weight and now I'm under 6 stone. Mr Doctor doesn't seem particularly interested. I'm not Anorexic or Bulimic and I am well aware that I look skeletal so there's no subconscious or mind problem at work there. So you see I really haven't been able to avail of your sound advice, which will really help others, no doubt about it, but in my circumstance it unfortunately doesn't. I'm in a Limbo world of my own and there really doesn't seem to be any cause or remedy available to help me understand or cure the situation. Thanks for reading this :)

Huge admiration and respect for your page and the attitudes and advice you give. A great comfort to most I'd say :) I unfortunately don't fit into most of the catagories elaborated upon :( I relate to Kathy (below), as I live in a rural area and although it is only a small town and I know everyone, I do not feel comfortable going out and meeting people or joining a group. It is totally beyond my ability + the paranoria prevents me from doing this. I agonise over going to the shop for food never mind going out to socialise. What few friends I have know that I don't like visitors so leave me in peace. They're also sick off listening to my tragic life that I don't mention it any more. I hurt badly inside but the pain doesn't ease with time, and I suppose talking about it all only re-opens old wounds :( Kinda at a dead end or a brick wall with it to be honest. Maybe some people think I wallow in it but I don't or I'd spend every chance I get complaining.

Can you talk about loneliness/isolation over next few weeks please? Not as easy as it sounds to join a club & make fantastic new friends. Most ppl join a club with their friends, go to meetings & home again. I'm off work a year, friends all married, kids etc, live alone rurally & the days get pretty long!

Isolation can have a negative effect on your mental health. Meeting people and getting involved in new things can make all the difference for you and for others. Join a club, meet up with friends, do a course there are many things to do if you look around. Not only will you feel better, but you will benefit from supporting others too. Friends are important, especially at difficult times, so it is good to keep up contact with them. Many of us can feel isolated and overwhelmed by problems sometimes. Talking about how you feel will help. If you don’t feel you can confide in someone you trust call a helpline such as the one run by the Samaritans - 1850 60 90 90.

Hi.

In the ad, it says that isolation can damage your mental health. I've viewed your website but can't find any information on this. Any chance you can expand on this please.

I was wondering is there a name to a illness of the mind that would make a person angry and fustrated at everyone around them specially after long stages of prolonged isolation

I want to become a fan. I am the other side of depression. Everyday gets better. I was lucky I have good support at home and I was able to talk to someone.

Mental Health is so very important, people should relax and try to laugh at least once a day, and even if there is just one person who knows what your going through, that can make all the difference..it does to me:)
