• Joe McElderry wins The X Factor 2009

  Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls it’s the night you have all been waiting for. For Olly and Joe, in the imitable words of The X Factor’s voice over, it was TIME. TO. FACE. THE. MUSIC!
  On a night of high emotion the show was kicked off in memorable style thanks to a rousing group performance from all of this year’s finalists. Singing Take That’s smash hit Never Forget, the class of 2009 strutted their stuff on The X Factor stage one last time, with their adorable baby pictures flashing on the screens behind them.
  It was then time for business – and first up to impress the public was Olly Murs with a swinging rendition of The Beatles classic Twist and Shout. Like so many times before the loveable Essex boy proved he is a master-entertainer, combining a healthy mix talent, endeavour, and fun.
  The homage to Michael Jackson’s thriller in the middle of the performance brought the house down, and had the four judges beaming at the sheer originality of it all.
  It was then Joe’s turn to stake his claim for the winner’s title as he took to the stage to sing Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing. The emotion Joe conveyed made it obvious he was following the song’s advice, The X Factor crown was in his sights and he wasn’t giving up on his dream.
  It was then time for last year’s star pupils Alexandra Burke and JLS to return to The X Factor stage and remind everyone why they have been such a success since they left the show 12 months ago. Singing a scintillating medley of Alexandra’s Bad Boys and JLS’ Everybody In Love, last year’s winner and runner-ups oozed star quality as they worked they way through a complicated dance routine, prompting a rapturous round of applause from the crowd and judges at its finale. What a fantastic start to the show!
  Leona Lewis delivered a pitch-perfect rendition of Oasis’ Stop Crying Your Heart Out before it was time for the final two to each perform the winner’s single, The Climb.
  Olly was first to tackle the number made famous by Miley Cyrus and did so with aplomb – a solid vocal proved to the world that he wasn’t just a dancer who could ‘sing a bit’ too.
  Then a suited and booted Joe took to the stage to perform the same song, leading Dannii to proclaim his rendition “effortless” and Simon to admit the competition was now “too close to call”.
  George Michael then entered the stage for the second time this weekend to perform his new single December Song, before it was time for the jaws of the nation to drop… pop royalty had arrived. Singing The Beatles hit Drive My Car, Sir Paul McCartney rolled back the years with the 12 X Factor finalists as accomplices. And as if that wasn’t enough, the Knight of the Realm then treated us to another performance, the always dramatic Live and Let Die – the perfect precursor to Dermot’s momentous announcement… The Results.
  The tension in the room was palpable. Gripped with anticipation Olly and Joe stood next to their mentors awaiting their fate. Until Dermot announced that the winner of The X Factor 2009 was… JOE McELDERRY!
  Joe had just enough time to compose himself before he closed the show singing his new single, The Climb.

• Stacey Solomon leaves The X Factor final 2009

  Last night was the big one. It's the grand finale! So here's the list of the finalists who performed three songs in particular order.
  Round 1: Audition songs

  Olly: Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
  Joe: Dance With My Father (Luther Vandross)
  
  Round 2: Contestant's choice
  Stacey: Feeling Good (duet with Michael Bublé)

  Joe: Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (duet with George Michael)
  
  Round 3: Favourite performance
  Stacey: Who Wants To Live Forever (week 6)
  Olly: A Fool In Love (week 2)
  Joe: Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (week 8 song 2)
  
  Robbie Williams then treated us to his second performance of the night with the second release from his new single, You Know Me. And then it was time for the dreaded results.
  One by one the final three entered the stage with their mentor in tow to await their fate. After what seemed like an eternity, Dermot finally announced that the first act to go through to the next stage of the final was Olly followed by Joe and the act leaving the show last night was Stacey. Both boys will battle it out tonight in the final show of the series at 7.30pm. The series 6 finalists return along with Sir Paul McCartney, last year's winner Alexandra Burke (whose reign will end tonight), last year's runners up JLS and the 2006 winner Leona Lewis.

• It's final time!

  The last shows:
  Tonight Joe, Olly and Stacey will each sing a Christmas song, duets song and a favourite song from the series. Joe has been teamed up with George Michael, Olly with Robbie Williams and Stacey with Michael Buble. The one with the least amount of votes will be kicked out tonight. Tomorrow the final two will sing the winner's song - reported to be Miley Cyrus's The Climb - before the 2009 X Factor winner is revealed.
  Losers return:
  The X Factor final 12 will return to the show this weekend to see the winner crowned. They include Danyl Johnson - who left last week - Scot Ricky Loney, big haired Jamie Archer and Lucie Jones. They will all be touring with next year's X Factor live show.
  Special guest stars:
  As well as the duet stars, other big names are also set to appear, including Paul McCartney - scheduled for tomorrow. Former show winners Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis will also perform, as well as last year's runners-up JLS.
  When is it on?:
  Both tonight's performance show and tomorrow's results show will both be on at 7.30pm and will last for two hours!
