- Los Caños A brief history
- Los Caños de Meca situated in the Straits of Gibraltar owes its beginnings to the Roman Fretus Herculeum and the Arab Boughaz el Tarek.
For early traders the only trade routes were by sea.Given the rich fish resources, fish salting factories were set up, of which some remain today . They produced the famous Garum, a fish sauce very popular thoughout the Roman empire, today we have ketchup.
The Romans left the temple of the God Juno, today submerged under the water
Moorish invaders named trafalgar after its caves and caños de mecca after discovering the abundance of natural springs. The Christians reconquered the area in the 14th century and built the watchtower system to protect the coast from marauding pirates. In 1805 the English defeated the combined Spanish and french fleet at the battle of trafalgar. Today caños is a layed back resort surrounded by natural beauty

Sorry that these entries are rather sporadic at the moment but i am having a job finding the time to update it . will work on it so i can make a more regular feature in the future. At the moment we have Daniel and Julian from Sheffield, England and Laurie from Quebec, Canada. They have all become the best of friends and are having a great time, they are at the moment burning the last of the drt grass, and finishing off the final weeding of the season along with various constuction projects, We are still getting rain which for us is fantastic as it is preserving our limited water supplies. In the veg garden we now have pumpkins which we will use for halloween, Cucumbers, Green beans,Peas, Red cabbage, Cauliflower, an assortment of summer salad leaves such as rocket, corn salsd, webbs etc, tomatoes, Radishes, Parsnips, onions, Garlic and carrots. This week we are planting the winter beets so all in all everything is going well. Altho we are still having problems growing the sacred holy basil and the woad, but with perseverance i hope we can bring these ancient plants into the modern world. Our three wwoofs have created a shelter in the wwoof area which can only be described as awesome. Photos to follow. More next week (Hopefully)
Have a great week0 commenti 937 giorni

Well the weather is getting warmer by the day, and the lush green grass is now starting to yellow and dry so its time to get the strimmer out and start cutting the wild meadow ready for the horse and donkey. We still have a lot of devil coachman beetles around and the lizards are getting more active with the welcome heat. The female wolf spiders are dragging their egg sacks behind them and they will fight to the death to protect their young. In the veg garden the broad beans have finally gone and the spring onions are slowly fattening into sweet summer salad onions. The cauliflowers and cabbages are flying along with the peas showing their first pods. Green beans planted a fortnight ago are starting to flower and everything else is coming on nicely. Still have to plant a few salad crops and the beetroot as well as next winters parsnips.
Well what can i say HEAVEN!!!0 commenti 950 giorni

Well its been a week of mixed weather, at the beginning the wind was replaced by rain which went on for two days then balmy summer weather. The garden looks a lot fresher and we saved our recycled water to fight the drought another day. We are now picking fresh mint, spring onions, parsley, rocket, webbs lettuce and the broad beans, and we are extending the vegetable garden daily. The mimosas needed another trim and the branches were mulched, we have to turn the mulch pile daily now as it begins to compost almost at once with the warm weather and this if left makes the mulch go mouldy, so it is important, the compost bins got a turn as well along with the rotting down straw and manure piles. We have taken some new photos of the gardens, houses and the local nature, will be posting soon!!
Well the evenings are getting longer and we can now enjoy a well earned cup of tea under the olive tree next to the veg garden to the sound of the crickets and the scent of the local pines.0 commenti 969 giorni
