Morning
There was no newsletter last week as I was one of the latest victims of the very strong flu bug that's been going around. It knocked me for six and I'm still trying to get rid of the last remaining symptoms.
UK FILM NETWORK
I've been getting great feedback from my report to BAFTA about Social Networking and they'll be investing more in this area and looking for further guidance throughout the year. I'm also in the process of setting up a monthly film night, working with Elliot Grove at Raindance and a local cinema in London to bring the best of independent film to life. If it works well, I'm hoping to clone it around the UK.
In the meantime, here's an article I wrote for Film and Festivals Magazine:-
http://www.ukfilm.tv/magazine/read/s...
UK THEATRE REVIEWERS
I'm currently looking to build a new team in Edinburgh, as the local team seem to be getting poached by the local magazine. It's good news for them and just shows the quality of the reviewers that we have at UKTN. It's coming up to Fringe time, so it's going to be busy, so the more the merrier in terms of applications. Reply to editor@uktheatre.net with "UK Theatre Reviewers" in the subject.
Have a great week in the world of theatre and film where you are.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY UK THEATRE NETWORK
Yes it's true. On July 1st 2001, the UK Theatre Network was launched as a social network for theatre lovers around the UK. To celebrate, I've got FIVE DVD's of CHESS THE MUSICAL to give away in advance of the UK release in September. All you have to do is name the two leading ladies who had a hit with the song "I KNOW HIM SO WELL" in 1985. Send your entries to editor@uktheatre.net and mark the subject "CHESS THE MUSICAL". Five winners will be chosen at random from the entries at the end of the July.

UK Radio Blog
The new UK Radio Blog has got off the ground and is now streaming live 365. This new service allows me to publish adverts for theatre and film productions, and I can also create voiceover ads for websites and blogs which will be broadcast to a global audience. I'm looking forward to creating my own jingles for the show too.
You can link to it here at anytime:-
http://www.live365.com/ukradioblog
The latest show is also broadcast from 12-2pm every Saturday around the West of Scotland:-

SKYNEWS.COM
I was scheduled to be live on Sky last Friday, when I got a phone call saying that Michael Jackson's death will be taking over my slot. So I've been rescheduled to this Tuesday 7th of the 7th at 7 !
In the meantime, here's last month's stories.

Apologia at The Bush Theatre
Published by: Saskia Green on Sunday 28th June 2009 03:06pm
The word ‘Apologia’ we are told by the sharp, acerbic character Kritsen, is a defence, a justification of a belief; it is also the title of her memoir, which incidentally bears no mention of her two sons.

UK Theatre Network - Free West End Theatre This Weekend
Hello UK Theatre Networker
It's new, it's fresh, it's your redesigned UKTheatre.TV. I've given it a lick of paint and I'm in the process of redesigning a logo for the new look website. Have a look here:-http://www.uktheatre.tv
Also new, is the UK Radio Blog. Now live online and streaming around the world, the radio show that started out in Scotland is now a live 365 radio station where you can listen to all the latest news, stories and music. A new show is uploaded every week and you can listen to it anytime while you are social networking - http://www.live365.com/ukradioblog
Look out for Sky News next Friday between 7-7:30pm, where you'll find another TV blog on Martin Stanford's Bafta award winning "News With A Web Agenda".
This week I went to see the play Oh Well Never Mind Bye at the Union Theatre in Southwark. It's a perfect venue to get close up and personal with any performance, and where you can see the latest talent in London. Each of the actors were first class and complimented a well written play with energy in the dialogue. The set design, lighting, sound and pace were all carefully considered and well executed. Find out more about the play here:-
http://upandcoming.webeden.co.uk/#/o...
And in the meantime, head down to Leicester Square this weekend where you'll see everything London’s West End has to offer, absolutely free. Among the acts taking part in this year’s West End LIVE are American talk show host Jerry Springer, who is currently appearing in Chicago, and I’d Do Anything winner Jodie Prenger, who performs with the cast of Oliver! Other shows taking to the open air stage in the middle of Leicester Square. There's also the Jersey Boys and La Cage Aux Folles, Hairspray, Wicked, We Will Rock You, Dirty Dancing, Avenue Q, Thriller Live, Stomp and two massive West End newcomers Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical and Sister Act. The main website was inactive when I checked but here it ishttp://www.westendlive.co.uk
Have a great week in the world of theatre, where you are.

Menopause: The Musical

Menopause: The Musical
Reviewed at The Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle
WHEN four different women are thrown together at a lingerie sale in a well-known London department store, it seems as though they have little in common. One is a shrewd business woman, one a vegan Earth mother, one a successful soap star and one a dowdy housewife from Skegness.

The Pianist at Manchester Royal Exchange
Published by: Caroline May on Friday 19th June 2009 02:06am
Two years ago audiences were raving about Neil Bartlett’s Manchester International Festival production of The Pianist, which was originally staged in the highly unconventional setting of a loft above the Museum of Science and Industry. Now there’s another chance to see it with the original cast in the Royal Exchange main house.

Mama Mia! The Musical
Published by: Elspeth Rae on Thursday 18th June 2009 07:06pm
MAMA MIA! The Prince Of Wales Theatre London
It's funny, because ever since I was little I have loved Abba songs, so it's not the music. No, I say, thank you for the music. And it's not the cast (although I could have wrung some of their necks at numerous times trhoughout.) I think it's the story. I know it's meant to be funny, but the whole thing is so cliched and so unfeasible, that at times I looked across to my friends and others in the audience who weren't struck down with incurable mamamiaitis, and watched a confused and clouded look wash over their faces.

From first impressions, a musical that deals with issues including poverty, homelessness, jealousy, betrayal, drug addiction and the AIDS epidemic, doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun.

The Imperial Ice Stars – Cinderella On Ice - Theatre Royal, Glasgow - 9th-13th June 2009
Published by: Jon Cuthbertson on Wednesday 10th June 2009 02:06pm
On their return to the Theatre Royal the Imperial Ice Stars show why the audience have been waiting so eagerly.
Before the show even begins, the impressive scale of this production is explained in the programme. The effort to transform the Theatre Royal stage into an ice rink for these talanted performers is no mean feat.

Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray

Matthew Bourne’s Dorian Gray
Reviewed by Sue Marks at Milton Keynes Theatre on Tuesday 9th June 2009.
This production is what dance should be: vital, flowing, sensual, but above all entrancing. It offers a variation upon Wilde’s original Picture of Dorian Gray whilst interpreting the same theme. In Wilde’s story a painting of Gray absorbs the corruption which should be visited upon the individual and by so doing encourages more and more corruption. As with all dance this production is open to personal interpretation but for me Bourne explores the corrupting influence of fame and beauty.

The Seafarer by Conor McPherson at Bolton Octagon

The Seafarer
Octagon Theatre, Bolton
5 June 2009
The final show in the Octagon season is Mark Babych’s valedictory production before he steps down as artistic director. The Seafarer is another example of his passion for new writing, skill at working with a tight ensemble on an intense chamber piece, and penchant for black comedy – a characteristic choice from the director who brought us Four Knights in Knaresborough, Blue/Orange and assorted Martin McDonagh classics.

Never Forget

“Never Forget” - the hit musical with the songs of Take That
“Never Forget” is the type of musical where to get the most enjoyment out of it, you have to be a Take That fan and you have to believe that the five guys on stage are actually the real members of Take That. Sadly I am neither a fan and I believe I was watching five actors. That said it’s a well performed piece.
