- HIGH DAYS AND DRY DAYS AT THUNDERTON HOUSE
THUNDERTON HOUSE takes its name from Archibald Dunbar of Thundertoun’, (in the parish of Longmay, by Aberdeen) – an eighteenth century owner. Prior to that, it was known as the ‘Kings House’ and the ‘Great Lodging’, with a regal past said to date as far back as the eleventh century. In the fourteenth century it was the palace of Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, and nephew of the great King, Robert the Bruce.
Most of the building which you see today was built in the seventeenth century by the first Lord of Duffus when the estate constituted a significant part of Elgin.
It has been a house richly linked with Stewart history – one Lord of Duffus lost it for his part in the 1715 rebellion. In 1746, Lady Arradoul (the then owner) entertained Bonnie Prince Charlie for the ten days before Culloden. His ghost still haunts the room in which he slept and the sheets from his bed became, at her own request, the shroud of Lady Arradoul.
- More History
- In 1800, John Batchen purchased Thunderton House, demolished most of it, and sold off land to form Batchen Street and Thunderton Place. It was then used for a variety of purposes – a church, furniture warehouse, printing office, Masonic Lodge, lemonade factory and hotel. At one time it was even a Temperance Hotel.
In 1929 John Munro gifted the house to Elgin Town Council, who then leased it to a series of hoteliers – some of whom were given to grand excesses.
Kings and men who would be King, Lords and Ladies, Princes and Earls have all crossed the threshold of Thunderton House over the centuries. These days we see few Lords and Ladies and not too many Princes – but we hope that when our customers leave, they feel that they’ve had a ‘Right Royal Time’. - THE PUB
