The Official Launch for the Sydney Marae Appeal Was held on Sat 26th July. The event was absolutely amazing. We had the likes of Buck Shelford, Kevin Tamati & Arthur Beetson in attendance. There was also a number of state and federal MP's all who are now very sympathetic to our cause and are willing to help where possible.
The cultural performances were truly inspiring with many non maori in the crowd exclaiming that that alone was worth the price of admission. Angelina Potapova a russian photographer in attendance said "the atmosphere was electric"
Many positives have come from the night. Tawrea Nikau will be running a story on the event on his show "The Code" back in NZ - About the proposed Sydney Marae:
- The Marae is a place where Maori people can gather for special occasions - weddings reunions and birthdays. It is a safe place where people can talk argue, take care of guests, pray and weep for their dead. The building of a Marae in Sydney is long overdue.
- Endorsed By
- In January Sydney's Maori community organisations met to launch an Appeal to fund the building of a Marae in Sydney. They then approached the construction Forestry Mining Energy Union(CFMEU) to assist with the organisation of this appeal. For more information on the CFMEU go to www.cfmeu-construction-nsw.com/ The CFMEU has graciously accepted this request for assistance and is keen to help.
One of the major functions the CFMEU will play is to receipt all monies donated and hold in trust all monies. The CFMEU will also ensure that no monies will be expended without the approval of the community organisations involved in the Sydeny Marae Appeal. - Endorsed By The Maori Community

Tena koutou katoa, Born and bred in Sydney but maintain a strong link to Aotearoa through my whakapapa. This marae is needed, not only as a place to hold hold hui and tangi's but as a place that Aussie-born Maoris can call their own - somewhere to belong. I'm a school teacher by trade and I would love to assist the marae appeal in some capacity. My elder brother Kris (www.kriskerehona.com) is a film/television producer, and we may be able to document the marae's aims, goals and development in the form of a documentary - not only to assist in gaining support, but also as a record or legacy of the project. Anyway, all my aroha toward everyone involved in this project - this will be a taonga for all of us. Ma pango ma whero ka tutuki ai te mahi
