Smokestack fans knew what to expect, but the rest of the Friday-night crowd in Mother Reilly's were first intrigued and then converted. The band started light and then swung through a blend of re-interpreted covers and originals that was heavy on the rockers. With a top-notch vibe firmly established, it was a pleasure to cruise through a more traditional second set, ending with a premiere of Sean Plunkett's tribute to Little Richard: 'Ballyogan Betty'.

The low-down:
Despite a remarkably low turn-out (due to the American presidential election, perhaps) Smokestack Lightning delivered the goods on this brisk November evening. The newies (Don't Tell Me, Got You On My Mind) came off nicely, and One-Room Country Shack managed to be even more elastic, spacious, dynamic and expressive than usual.

The low-down:
The crowd was attentive, the sound technician was skilful, and Smokestack Lighting were in top form after a weekend of recording. This gig had everything going for it, and the freakish accidental breaking of three bass strings in a row only slightly destabilised the first set. Confident takes of Route 66 and Drinkin' Wine, as well as the first live version of the original Got You On My Mind formed the memorable moments.
