Save our Scottish Culture!
Me, Myself, and I
The Scottish Wildcat Association (SWA) is dedicated to protecting and conserving Britain's only remaining wild feline; the Scottish Wildcat. There are less than 400 Wildcats left, and if we do nothing, in less than a decade, they could be gone forever.

Wildcats are the very essence of the Scottish spirit; wild, mysterious, free and infamously untameable being the only wild animal that can never be tamed by human hand. In Scottish history, clans were so inspired by the Wildcat’s persistence and irrepressible desire for freedom they united under the image of the mighty feline to fight for the independence of the land.

Wildcats are imposing predators, respected as "Tigers of the Highlands" for their intelligence, fearlessness, patience, agility and power. However, even Scotland’s best predator cannot compete with the destruction of humans, who cause about 92% of their deaths through snares, roads and guns.
Please help us save the Wildcat from extinction.
What does SWA do?
We run awareness campaigns (like this page) to spread the word of the Wildcat's alarming situation and encourage people to help out however they can. We strongly support the official captive breeding-for-release program for the Wildcats, and promote conservation work for those still in the wild. We support and keep good relations with organisations that are partaking in research regarding the future of the Wildcat, and are also doing our best to raise money as a charity to go towards research and conservation.

If you have any questions about how we're helping to save the Wildcat, feel free to ask us here on bebo, or click the link further down the page to find out more at the SWA official website. The Scottish Wildcat Association is a charity registered in Scotland number SC040397
How can I help?
You can learn how to give a donation here: http://www.scottishwildcats.co.uk/do...

There are many fun ideas for volunteer work here: http://www.scottishwildcats.co.uk/vo...

You can become a member of SWA here: http://www.scottishwildcats.co.uk/jo...

If you see a wildcat in the wild, report it here to help us learn where thriving populations still inhabit: http://www.scottishwildcats.co.uk/si...

And very importantly, tell people about us! Send friends and aquaintances here or to one of our other sites to find out about the Wildcat for themselves and see if they can help us out.

If you have any great ides we haven't covered, please do get in touch with them!
Snare traps are still legal in Scotland!
Please sign this petition, for the sake of all the poor animals that get caught in their cruel grip. Snares are an inhumane way to deal with foxes, and more often than not also trap pet cats and dogs, protected species like otters, badgers and our beloved Wildcats. As this profile shows, Wildcats are in enough trouble as it is. Please help to stop their unecessary murder by filling out a petition, and even emailing your MSP to ask him to ban snaring here: http://www.bansnares.com/ Or find more information on snaring, different petitions and how to help out by visiting this site: http://www.antisnaring.org.uk/
SWA Website
If you're at all interested in the fate of the Scottish Wildcat, please check out the SWA's official website, which has tonnes more information about Wildcats and how we can help protect them from this undeserved fate. You can find it here: http://www.scottishwildcats.co.uk/
Project Wildcat Haven
We will begin a massive project this Summer that essentially involves preparing an area of the Highlands as a haven for Wildcats to thrive in. This will hopefully become a good location to reintroduce our captive Wildcats to the wild, and a place for them to breed and re-establish their population. All the information and updates throughout the project will appear on this website: http://www.wildcathaven.co.uk/

  • Easy Donation Ideas 01/08/09

This blog hopes to introduce you to two really easy ways you can donate to the charity, one method doesn't even cost you a penny! Keep reading and it'll all make sense, I promise.

The first (and absolutely free) method is to use everyclick as your search engine. Just by spending five minutes signing up and messing around to see how it works, I've raised 22p for the charity! This may not sound like a world-changing amount, but every penny counts for the association, and the more people raising twenty pences, the more it's going to add up. And more importantly, if each five minute mess around raises twenty pence... think of how much someone could raise when using the search engine regularly! Signing up is easy, but remember to go to your profile settings and specifically search for the Scottish Wildcat Association as the charity you wish to raise money for. And not much exploring is needed to find links to set the search page as your home page, making you more likely to use it, and even to set it as your default search engine for the search bar in your tool bar. So what are you waiting for?! Go forth and raise money for the association for free! Surely you can spend five minutes on us every so often?
    Sign up here: www.everyclick.com/scottishwildcats

The second method is actually through ebay, for anyone who sells items, no matter how occassionally. You can set your profile up to give a percentage of the money from every item you sell straight to the association. But don't think you miss out because of this, as not only do you get the warm fuzzy feeling from helping save these beautiful creatures from extinction, ebay will actually reward you for your generosity by giving you discounts when you buy items! Say, for example, you decided to give 50% of your sales to SWA, ebay would then take 50% off the price of all your purchases! Or if you chose to give 20%, you'd get 20% off. Simple.
Find out how to sign up for this here: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/ebayforchari...

I really hope these two very simple, yet very effective ideas have inspired you enough to try them out. If you have any problems setting either system up, get in touch and I'll try my best to help sort things. And for goodness sake, spend five minutes on the easyclick thing! Seriously, if everyone did this it would hugely help the associations funds.

Together we can make a difference,
    Claire

  • First Wildcat Update 18/07/09

Now that we have a handful of friends who genuinely care for the fate of the wildcat, I feel the time is right to create our first bebo blog to let you know what has been going on in the SWA and some previously unmentioned ways you can help show support.

Our invasion of online social networking sites has been a relatively new process for the association, and from our bebo point of view I am delighted to report that things are going much better than I'd dared to hope in the short time we have been active. Thank you everyone who has accepted a friend request from us, and I am truely delighted to thank the few friends we've made already that have willingly requested a friendship from us, which is a great sign that the profile is becoming heard of and supported in the bebo community.

Our other networking sites (twitter, facebook, myspace) are also up and running, and the relevant links can be found on our profile, although we're still looking for a volunteer to take charge of the myspace profile. Please get in touch if you're interested or know someone who might be.

Our friends at the Wild Cat Conservation Legal Aid Society have also recently launched a newsletter called Wild Cat Advocate. It contains plenty of information on the species and everything that is being done worldwide to help conserve them. It is free to download from their website here if you're interested; http://www.wcclas.org

We are also being supported by our friends at Your Cat Magazine, who run articles on the Wildcat and help to raise money to improve captive breeding habitats. The magazine is fantastic for you cat lovers out there, so check out their website here to find out more; www.yourcat.co.uk

Volunteer spaces still needed to be filled!

As mentioned before, we're still looking for someone to look after our myspace page.

We can provide leaflets and such to anyone willing to publicly spread awareness about the association. Any ideas on how best to use these rescources are always welcome.

We're also looking for people who are specifically willing to spend a little time attending local cat shows to spread awareness for the association. We'll arm you with leaflets, posters, a tshirt and a backdrop and such, and can brush up your knowledge on the Wildcat to enable you to answer any questions the public may have. If anyone is interested, please get in touch and we'll try our best to get something sorted out.

We also currently have a newsletter that is sent by email to subscribers every three months (you can subscribe on the SWA website), but we are hoping to maximise the potential of it with a volunteer who could act as an editor and turn it into something interesting and informative that subscribers will really look forward to receiving. And it'd be great work experience. ;)

Please get in touch if you're interested in helping

Thanks for reading this, I hope you found it informative and please get in touch with any questions or ideas. We'd love to hear from anyone who'd be willing to fill one of our volunteer posts, or anyone who has an idea for a completely new one! No suggestion is too small or silly, we'd love to hear them.

Together we can make a difference,
    Claire

Hehe yeah is so cute when hamsters run on the wheel together, my ratties do that all the time, well the babies do... Luke's to lazy to go on his wheel... So howz is you? :)

'/\__/\ (='..'=) (";) _(";) ........><((((º> {^_^} Memories, Precious Memories {^_^} My Bob Cat named Tom looked so much like the one in your picture, they are native to my area here in Western Kentucky, I have seen orange ones and gray ones also, mine was gray. They are Bob Cats and haven't much of a tail, I would not suggest anyone attempt to remove a Wild Cat from it's nest either, I was a child and saw them in a cavity beneath a Wood Bridge so I took one. It was my mother that recognized the kitten to be a Wild Cat, I wanted it, because it was different than our common farm cats. The next day after I had removed the kitten the nest was empty, momma cat had moved them to another location. I taught Tom to say milk and he would place his head into the empty dish and say milk when I went to milk the cows. His paws were near the size of our Farm Cats heads as best as I can remember, Tom grew to be a very large cat and he was my best buddy at the time. Patches

{^_^} Thank you for your beautiful comment, I love Wild Cats. Here we have wild Bob Cats, when I was a child, I took a Wild Bob Cat from it's nest and raised it. That was one of the best and most lovable pets I ever had, until a neighbor forgot and killed it one day, that really hurt. He bragged that it was 7 feet long until I reminded it was my lovable pet. Wild Cats used to follow me when I was walking on my way to church, they never bothered to harm me. Once I was sleeping near a creek and a Wild Bob Cat came upon me and frightened let out a loud scream, it ran away and so did I. Patches

Cool :D I hamsters :D Shadow and Freckles. Those are such cute names :D I have never had hamsters. I had mice when I was younger though. Hehe maybe my cats do like my ratties to much ;) My kitty monster is watching then right now :D Yeah Its a shame about Honey and Mach :( They where good dogs. We had to have Honey put to sleep because she is old, but mach had a stoke, and in a way that was kinda worse because it was so fast :( Anywayz that was weeks away, and I have to more on I guess, though its kinda hard because they become part of the family after a while. Cool I am gonna check out your pics right know :D So How have you been?

Hey :D How are you? Wow haven't talked to you in ages :D I'm okay myself, two of my dogs, Honey and Mack had to be put down recently which I'm quite upset about, but they were old so hey, that life I guess. On a better note, I've got a couple of new ratties, they are 5 months old, and sisters, I have taken a couple of pictures of them which is worth looking at as they are sooooo cute. Have you ever had rats? They are such intelligent, friendly and social pets. I think its fairly safe to say that my cats don't like them though ;)
