------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi comrades,
It's the Scottish Socialist Youth conference this weekend!
The conference will take place this Saturday (13/6/09) in Glasgow. The venue is the Kinning Park Complex, which is situated directly across from the Kinning Park subway station, so if you're travelling from outside Glasgow it's easy to get to!
Conference starts at 12pm and ends at 6pm.
There will be workshops on:
- Legalise Cannabis
- Fighting the BNP
- Building the student left in the wake of the occupations over Palestine throughout the country
- Fighting for young workers rights
We'll also be electing a new National Organiser, and a new National Executive Committee (NEC), who're responsible for the running of SSY from month to month.
There is no deadline for nominations for these positions or for if you wish to submit any motions to conference, so if you're planning on running or have a motion you'd like us to discuss, you aren't too late!
You don't have to be a member to attend, anyone aged 26 and under is welcome.
Hope to see you there!

Lessons from Glasgow East Election Result
by
Omar Ibrahim
If Solidarity and the SSP had been one party this would have beaten Lib Dems into 5th place. Scotland needs to unite its radical red clans.0 Replies 197 weeks
This should be our agenda. To build bridges and join as one to break up the British state.
How can this happen and can we come to terms with the idea that Tommy is a socialist hero? He was hung out to dry and his support continues to wane.
Is the concept of a radical red element in Scotland's move towards independence, in its shift away from Labour, more relevant than a politician's image?
I left the SSP and the SWP when Tommy was expelled.
And I voted SNP cos I knew this would be a good fight.
And because we have been SPLIT!

I support the SSY, great party although I don't agree with one or two of their policies. I am against abortion and not quite decided about cannibas yet. I hope to join SSY as soon as possible and will be trying to get along to most meetings and marches.

LegaliseCannabisMarch097/20/09Why is a drug that causes far less social harm than alcohol or tobacco criminalised? Why is it criminalised when the "war on drugs" has failed? Why keep cannabis in the hands of criminal gangs and drug dealers, when it could be legalised and regulated, like alcohol or tobacco? Building on last years successful march, we are having another this year! LEGALISE IT - 2009 - MARCH TO LEGALISE CANNABIS GLASGOW August 22nd ASSEMBLE @12 George Square - March to Kelvingrove Park. We will have Djs, bands and other entertainment in Kelvingrove Park..

Dan, once again, they are not "populist" and bizarre" policies- you just cant see past the free market. These are socialist policys which are in place in other socialist nations right now in "reality".

Andy Bowden5/6/09"How on earth can you force a private business to set their prices without trying to nationalise them?" By nationalising them. Or by legally forcing them to have maximum prices for certain goods. The SNP for example are instituting minimum prices for alcohol, which is not impossible or illegal. Alternative is govt support for community owned supermarkets, whose role is to provide affordable, healthy food, something that would challenge poverty and ill health. Venezuela, a developing country has set up such supermarkets for example. Unfortunately New Labour won't consider running services for social need instead of profit because they're hopelessly tied to free market capitalism despite the fact is demonstrably collapsed.

Funny how these radical cults pop up all over the place. The SSP is a populist party who have little touch with reality - hence their bizarre policies. One of your members said that the SSP want to lower supermarket prices. How on earth can you force a private business to set their prices without trying to nationalise them? Ridiculous!
