PAUL KEOGAN ON THE LIGHTING DESIGN FOR ROMEO AND JULIET...
Lighting is key in setting the scenes in this production…..as very few props are used to allow scenes slide into each other quickly the lighting lets audiences know they’re in a different scene….
Inspiration for the lighting came from films such as Sin City and Blade Runner… we wanted a dark, ‘graphic novel’ look … light haze is used in the air to make the light seem solid.….
Here are some examples of how lighting is used…
Act II Sc 2 - THE BALCONY SCENE
But soft! What light through yonder window breaks
Use of darkness and light….
…the balcony is lit and the light streams through the window from behind Juliet… adding to her radiance and beauty….
….the rest of the stage is in darkness…allowing Romeo to hide in the shadows….
Act III Scene 5 – MORNING AFTER THEIR WEDDING NIGHT
More light and light: more dark and dark our woes
The light becomes the enemy…. it means that Romeo must leave Juliet…..and go to Mantua….
…light slowly fills the stage….Juliet protests but Romeo must leave…
….Juliet eventually concedes as the light continues to build in the room…..

DENIS CLOHESSY ON THE MUSIC FOR ROMEO AND JULIET…
Score for ROMEO AND JULIET is a combination of original and pre-existing music…influences for the original score ranged from God Speed You Black Emperor to the Arctic Monkeys…
ORIGINAL SCORE
Two principal themes: the Romeo and Juliet love theme and the Montague & Capulet fight theme.
Romeo and Juliet love theme…
…uses a kind of reverse effect on the guitar…
…captures the struggling quality that the two principals are undergoing…
...as if they can never quite reach what they're looking for…
Montague & Capulet fight theme…
...first heard through a radio brought on stage for the opening brawl…
...most of the following scene change passages are then based on the chord progression used for this fight….
PRE-EXISITING MUSIC
Amy Winehouse Back to black…
….used in the ballroom scene…
… Romeo and his friends are taking a huge risk sneaking into the Capulet’s party…
…broad appeal yet has an edge to it…
Royksopp's night out…
…also featured in the ballroom scene…
…used as an underscore for Tybalt who is furious to see Montagues in their house…
…strikingly dramatic harmonic and key changes with distorted lead lines that give Tybalt’s soliloquy extra menace…
A version of 'Besame Mucho' performed by guitarist Oscar Aleman
…used when Juliet is discovered by her family who think she is dead on the morning of her wedding day…
..Shakespeare detailed the sound of oboes in his original to represent the celebrations outside while tragedy unfolded inside in a great example of music 'playing against the scene'….
… Aleman was a guitarist from the 30's…the old style recording is particularly evocative with a certain amount of poignancy despite the loving sentiments in the lyrics...

Oh my word!...I saw ur production today...it was so brilliant! So inspiring! It just makes you want to act...after the show I just wanted to run on stage and chat with all the cast members, and ask about their experience of doing the production...and the acting and everything!
I actually so annoyed at the end because I knew that it was over....I just enjoyed it so much that I didn't want it to end!
Thank you for inspiring me.
