  • Join Victoria Pendleton on the Big Red Ride

    Dust off your lycra and join Olympic champion cyclist Victoria Pendleton for our brand new bike ride from London to Eastbourne.

    Covering 75 miles the ride will start from Blackheath Common in south-east London and take you heading south into the East Sussex countryside and all the way to the finish on Eastbourne’s magnificent seafront.

    Whether you’re new to cycling or experienced in the saddle this achievable challenge offers you an exciting new route in beautiful British countryside.

    Each rider is required to pay a non-refundable deposit of £25 to secure their place and in addition to this we ask you to raise £150* in sponsorship which will directly support the work of the British Red Cross in the UK and overseas.

    All riders will receive:
    -equipment advice
    -Red Cross t-shirt
    -post-event reception
    -training and nutritional advice
    -a comprehensive fundraising pack
    -contact with a Red Cross fundraiser for support and advice.

  • Zimbabwe update: we are fighting cholera but the situation is still bad...

    Thanks to all those of you who have raised awareness of our Zimbabwe appeal.
    Zimbabwe is no longer in the news, and the cholera situation is improving, thanks to the end of the rainy season and the work of the Red Cross and others. But this is relative: there are still more than 87,900 cholera cases.

    Within six hours of contracting cholera, if left untreated, you're chronically dehydrated and within a day you can die. It is vital that we continue to reach as many communities as possible with the messages on how to prevent cholera to keep the current situation under control.

    Here is a fantastic Peer Education opportunity for you to educate School and Youth groups that will be visiting the BODYWORLDS exhibition at The 02, from now until August 2009.

    Housed within the Greenwich Peninsula at The Bubble, the BODYWORLDS exhibition has more than 200 exhibits, including whole body plastinates in dramatic poses, showing the complexity, resilience, and vulnerability of the human body. See here: http://www.visitlondon.com/bodyworlds/

    The National Youth Agency e-bulletin this month highlights the recent debate on incentives for volunteering - Former home secretary David Blunkett has recommended all young people between the ages of 16 and 25 should do at least six months of 'intensive' voluntary work.
