  • A Day in the Life of

    Hello,

As June is the month for Professionals in the Positive Image campaign, run by ConstructionSkills, I thought I would contact a professional I know to give us a taste of what a typical day in her life is like.

Jane is the Managing Director of her own Architecture practice in Buckinghamshire, and a day in her world is:

'Well I am up at 6 and off to the gym if there is time. I make sure the kids are OK for studies, lunch etc, and then see the builders for a chat (we are almost finished building an eco-house for our family). I start work in the office about 8:30.

There is no such thing as a typical day here as every one is different, but usually I have about one or two meetings with clients here or in their building, or go on site to meet the builders, then spend time with my staff to oversee their technical work, an hour or two doing design work, and the rest of the time stuck into administration or responding to emails.

I am deeply involved with marketing the practice and planning for the future, and this takes a good number of hours of my week. I also chair various local community group meetings to review revitalisation of the local town, and do about one day a week of meetings or paperwork for the RIBA. Sometimes these extra curricular activities are very glamorous - I was introduced to Prince Charles recently, but mostly they are hard work!

I go home if I can by 7pm, and the family cooks and eats together most evening before falling into bed for what I feel is well earned rest!'

Sounds exhausting but very interesting to me! Dont know about you, but I am kind of keen to hear a bit more about the eco-house.. Might see if I can find out more - want me to share if I do?

  • Can you imagine designing a new Parliament?

    Hey guys

I just found out about this competition and thought it was kinda cool so wanted to let you all know about it...

Designing a Parliament for the Future Event
    The RIBA 175 Schools Competition
7-17 July Westminster Hall, Houses of Parliament

This year RIBA challenged schools across England and Wales to design a building to replace the current Palace of Westminster in one of the English regions that would meet the needs of the Government in the 21st Century. Entered by 124 schools the competition is being run to mark the 175th anniversary of RIBA being established and also the great fire that led to the construction of the current Palace of Westminster.

Eleven regional winners aged between 14-19 have been selected and are now working up their designs with an architectural mentor in preparation for being displayed at the exhibition. The overall winner will be awarded at a special ceremony which is taking place on 7 July

Entrance to the exhibition is FREE so if you are interested in looking at the winner of the competition visit www.parliament.uk for more information.

I think i might try check out the winners when the exhibition is open! Hope to see you there!

I have just found out about this fantastic scheme that ConstructionSkills run that is perfect for you if you are about to start a degree in a Construction course. There are so many benefits that I just couldn’t wait to tell you about it!

It’s called the Inspire Scholarship Scheme and its offers you the chance to go to university and come out the other end with minimal debt! How great would that be!

    Other benefits include:

    * Up to £9,000 financial support to help you through university! Good news in these tough economic climates!
    * Contact with your sponsor before you even begin your course.
    * A 10-week work placement with your matched employer in the summer of your first year - with the option of additional work experience. Which could help you get that much needed foot in the door for a job when you graduate!

    Hello Tracy,
yeah I am lookin for a job but I am also looking for help on my thesis. I am lookin into the modern methods of copnstruction in the 21st century and pointing out how sustainable the are or vice versa. Then my aim is to highlight areas in which it can be improved. Such issues as- 1 is the design of the building considered when its being built so it uses more natural light than energy light 2 then waste issues like what waste in being generated and is it being recycled if so where is it recycled 3 is it local or does it have to be transported which increases carbon footprint. Have waste masses declined due to the introduction of laws in april of 2008 or have waste masses just continued to rise. Overall how can modern day construction be made more sustainable or can it due to the lack of laws and govermental legislation. these are some issues I am considering and if you could shed some light on them it would be great.
    Kind Regards
    William

    Hi Kevin
Thats a valid point and there’s no easy fix. The whole industry is affected, some areas more than others.
Major house builders are offering discounts through shared ownership schemes being made even more attractive to new buyers but it is a slow process. However we are seeing some movement with house builders putting foundations in the ground in the hope of an upward turn in the marketplace and work in the domestic market seems buoyant with people spending their money on kitchens, extensions, gardens etc…
We still do need to promote the industry to meet the demand when the market gets stronger. When this will be we don’t know but it will happen and that is why nobody can afford to be complacent. If we turn our back on innovation, enterprise and future talent now we face a real skill shortage in five or ten year’s time. Some companies already recognise the risk and have committed to boosting their recruitment intakes and offering more work experience.

    Hi Cahal

I am one of many intelligent, talented girls working in construction. I have always enjoyed building things – from the Lego sets when I was younger, to design projects in school and now to building motorways. I greatly enjoy working in the construction industry, am treated as an equal by male members of staff and am judged on my abilities and not my gender. On the construction site I work on there are a number of female members of staff. These include trainee engineers, section engineers, machine drivers and even the design manager for the £75m scheme I am currently working on. It just goes to show that being a girl does not stop you having a successful and happy career in construction. There are people who still have the opinion that construction is a man’s job, but I’m glad to say that in all the hundreds of people I have worked with over the past years, I haven’t met one yet!

    Hi Cahal,

I have worked with numerous female colleagues throughout my career so far in the construction industry. You don’t necessarily come across too many women completing trade roles, but the one’s in which I have have been more than competent within their roles. You tend to mainly find females in managerial roles such as site management, quantity surveying, estimating and planning to name but a few, all of which have been highly skilled and capable in their jobs.

It doesn’t make a difference in which your sex is, the difference is how the person conducts themselves in their role. The difference is whether they are trained to complete their tasks competently, are confident and self motivated.

    Hello Cahal,
That’s certainly a strong opinion and whilst you have every right to it factually it doesn’t hold much I’m afraid. If you have ever been across Waterloo Bridge in London and admired it’s beauty as Italian Sculptor Antonio Canova did remarking it 'the noblest in the world', you might be surprised to know it was built almost entirely by women whilst the men were away fighting WW2. That is just one example where women have been part of amazing construction projects.
I have worked in construction for over 10 years and my ability is not affected by my gender what so ever.
Maybe its worth thinking about how much you would like someone telling you couldn’t do something you loved and were good at just because you were a boy.
If its construction you wish to work in I wish you the best of luck, but be careful one day your site manager might just be a woman!

    Hi Claudz,
Yes I do think it is an alright job. You can do whatever you want to do. If construction is the way you want to go then go for it and don't let anyone stand in your way!
You will always get comments being a minority (I was the only girl in my class at college), but you will learn to dish out the comments just as good as they can. I did find it hard to start with but it was what I wanted to do and I was good at it.
You don't have to go straight into site work from school. You could go on to further education and do an HNC in construction. This will give you a good background into all elements of construction which leaves you free and with a good qualification to pick the trade that best suits you.
I did it the other way round. I researched construction trades and picked the one I thought I might enjoy the most. 15 years down the line I am now teaching that trade.

If you want anymore advice do ask, happy to help!!!

    Hello again,

I notice there are a lot of people wanting to gain some work experience and are unsure where to begin. Best place to start would be to check out bConstructive which lists companies that are willing to give work experience and contact them direct for information. Go to www.bconstructive.co.uk/careers/workfor for the full list! Also I know that the following website might be of use to you www.work-experience.org

Good luck and keep me posted how you get on!
