OUTBURST Queer Arts Festival is back!

A Big Thanks to all of you who supported the Outburst festival in November 07!
It was a fantastic success and it's clear from the enthusiasm and great atmosphere around the festival that OUTBURST is a very welcome new addition to the queer calendar in Belfast.
The feedback we got from you was very helpful as well and has given us loads of great ideas...

We know you want much more great queer theatre, music, art, film, performance and creative workshops in 2008, so that's exactly what we're planning.
As well as the big festival itself in November 08, we will be running a series of small satellite events and workshops throughout the year, just to keep the great entertainment and creativity on a roll. Keep an eye out for future bulletins and opportunities to get creative yourself but, for now, here's a couple of OUTBURST events you can put in your diary, as well as some other OUTBURST news....

  • OUTBURST CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!

    We know from chatting to festival goers that lots of you are keen to get involved in the festival on a creative or organisational level. So...we are opening the committee to new members! We are looking for volunteers with a passion for creativity, a great positive attitude, lots of ideas and most importantly, the time and commitment to see a professional level festival through to November and beyond. The basic commitment will be a monthly meeting (usually about 2 hrs, with biscuits), a couple of hours worth of tasks between meetings, helping out at events, publicity etc. We're particularly keen to get people on board who have experience in fundraising, marketing, publicity and organisation, though it would also be a great learning opportunity for anyone with an interest in arts event development and organisation, so if you've just got oodles of enthusiam and drive, that's okay too. We're an upbeat and positive collective of diverse queer folk, so it should be great fun as well as occasional hard work.

    Don't forget, we are always open to suggestions for events, collaborations and partnerships so feel free to email us anytime.

  • SATURDAY 26th APRIL 2008

    Reading of a new play by Shannon Yee, Cafe @ The Black Box, Hill St. (2pm, Free Adm.)
    Outburst is all about supporting vibrant new queer creativity and this afternoon reading is no exception. Local (via New York) playwrite Shannon Yee will be previewing some of her new work with performers, so take a break from the shopping, grab a cappucino and be mightily entertained in the lovely chilled out cafe setting at Black Box. More details to follow.

    In other news...Not an OUTBURST event but for those of you who enjoyed the Wine, Women and Words event at last year's festival, Lesbian Line will be presenting another evening of poetry and prose at 8pm in La Boca (formerly Alto's), Fountain St. on March 6th. Please note that this is a women-only event.

    Rae Spoon and guests at Dubarry's Bar, Gresham St. (Tickets on Door, £5)
    Rae Spoon is a critically acclaimed Canadian bluegrass/alt. country performer, influenced by the greats likes Hank Williams and Woodie Guthrie but more in tune with modern day performers such as Joanna Newsome and Sufjan Stevens. Describing himself as "a transgendered person raised by Albertan Evangelists", his warm and colourful musical storytelling has seen him share a stage with everyone from Emmylou Harris and The Be Good Tanyas to Ani Difranco and Natalie Merchant. He's been described as "one of the most genuinely gifted and original songwriters to come out of the country genre for a long time."
    If you like your music with a big honest queer heart and lots of rich toe-tapping goodness, this one's unmissible!
