Hey everybody – what’s the craic?
As you can see from the title, it’s Keith Broni here – Maynooth’s First Year Representative for the current academic year. And as I write this blog, I’m sprawled across my couch watching ‘Shaun of the Dead’, trying desperately (and failing miserably) to ignore one of the most disgusting hangovers of all time. How and why? It’s all thanks to Maynooth’s Student’s Union and the Executive Committee’s “bonding trip” to Galway!
But my involvement in the Union has also extended beyond getting pissed on the other side of the country. Despite not actually receiving much correspondence from First Year students (where’s the love lads?), I’ve been a fairly active member of the Executive, helping out with little tasks such as putting up posters for the wide variety of events going on and larger ones such as gathering together Class Representatives to give the student body full and comprehensive representation at the college’s monthly Union Council meetings. On that point, if anyone out there (First Year of otherwise!) thinks they’d like to have their voice heard directly by the heads on the Union, they should send their details (name, student number and all e-mail addresses) to either myself or any other member of the Executive.
As well as this, drawing on my experience as an Assistant Head Boy (Eoin, Mark and Donal are smiling from ear to ear right now), I’m one of the chief organizers of several high-profile balls that will hopefully take place in the latter half of this academic year, continuing on what last Thursday’s Theology Ball started. These include a follow-up to last year’s highly successful Science Ball in the Springfield Hotel, as well as Maynooth’s first ever Arts Ball (and maybe even a proper First Year Ball to be able to say that I actually did eventually live up to my job description!). Details on each of these are forthcoming (aka. whenever I get definite dates booked).
Yet obviously most importantly of all, I am soon to become vital component of Maynooth’s impending, eh, “Anti-Catastrophe Team”. This is going to be a specialized team of Exec members ready to deal with all forms of disaster and emergency that could occur within the college, but especially that of a zombie invasion. Yeah, zombies. So chillax – you guys’ll all be in safe hands soon. More information can be gained via contacting Club’s Officer Mark Seery and Finance Officer Eoin Byrne, and if you are interested in joining our cause, you can become a Class Representative (see above) and help us protect the college from all major threats (zombies) by approving of the team during Union Council.
Anyway, that’s all from me for the moment. Cya around dudes!

The Man, the Mystery
Word crackers and people of all other ethnicities, hope you’re all having a good time this year and that you all think that I’m as brilliant as I think I am. This year has been going pretty well for me so far, I’ve really enjoyed the work I’ve been doing this year and working with some of the exemplary chaps around the union, much more fun than last year. So some of you may be asking, who is this fantastic man and why is he typing such beautiful words. Well I’m Mark Seery the Clubs Officer around the Union and some of my achievements are.
o I won the egg and spoon race and the sack race in school twice
o I can pee over a 7 ft tall wall
o I’m the longest serving exec officer
o I once met Joe Dolan on the street
o I was in the Olympics
o I had my own talk show on CBS
o I once set fire to a swimming pool
So the things I’ve been working on this year have been widely acknowledged as probably the most important things ever. Myself and Eoin Byrne (Finance Officer and all ‘round tosser) found out that the college and the students union don’t actually have an action plan for Zombie invasion so we’ve begun work on that as we really believe it is necessary. I was conscripted onto the editorial team for the spoke which I didn’t mind until I realised it required work and that my fedora wouldn’t be arriving for at least 3 months. I’ve also been sitting.
My main work has brought me into close proximity with many interesting and in some cases hideous people, you know who you are. I’ve really enjoyed working on the Clubs and Society side of things though. There are some really enthusiastic and annoying people in this college who are doing an ungodly amount of work with Clubs and Socs running or getting them off the ground like the fantastic men of Epic soc. I’ve also been sitting.
I went down for the Oireachtas to represent Maynooth also. Still not entirely sure what I was meant to be doing down there but it seemed like I was doing the right thing, the pictures documenting my self destruction made it look like I was having fun and myself and Eoin Byrne (tosser) managed to make it onto international TV in Togas and the next night in a Hawaiian shirt cause I’m awesome. I’ve also been sitting.
So good day and good morrow to thee gentle folk and I shall see thee round the college
I’ve also been sitting.

Alright champs? Cén chaoi a bhfuil sibh? Is dóigh liom go bhfuil ‘chuine dhuine slán is sabhailte i ndiadh seachtain na Freshers! Anois tá sé in am don staidéar! Woo! Anyways, as you may know, my main concern this year is to put together a successful Seachtain na Gaeilge. Since I’ve been back I’ve been having meetings with Kate Fennell (the Offical Languages Act Officer) and Siobhán Ní Fhoghlú (Oifigeach na Gaeilge) to put some basic ideas down on paper for the week. Remember if you have any ideas for the week (be they big or small), do get in contact with me!
The other thing I’ve been working on is the annual University trip to the Oireachtas (an Irish language and cultural festival) which is being held in Cork this year. After a successful AGM by an Chuallacht Ghaeilge, we filled up places to the event within minutes. This meant that not everyone is getting financial assistance to go to the event. We hope that those who couldn’t get on the list on time to try their best to come anyway and we’ll meet you down there.
At the start of the year I also put together a little music event in the canteen. With the help of the Music Society, a trad band visited the canteen to entertain students and staff with some recognisable tracks. I’m hoping to make this a monthly event that will encourage Irish culture in the University. Apart from that I think that it’s to have music of any sort in the canteen during lunch. If anyone would like to play (trad or not) on front of a few hundred people during lunch, e-mail me! I’ll sort out the rest.
You may know that I’m not all about the Irish language (there are other aspects to my personality… well a few). As part of my remit, I have to make sure I organise events that might not be directly linked with Ireland or Irish culture. This year I hope to get some more cultural events going in the college to integrate international students and to give us a chance to understand the workings of other cultures. If have an interest in world cultures, or are from abroad, do get in contact with me and we’ll get some culture going!
Remember that my office hours are from 3-5p.m on Wednesdays. If you have any suggestions please drop on by! And for those of us who choose not to leave our houses, you can e-mail me at gaeilge@nuimsu.com.
Beir bua!
Johnny
