The WRX STi has a boxer engine with a 6-speed manual transmission that is able to put out 305 horsepower @ 6,000 RPM and 290 ft-lbs of torque @ 4000 rpm. The engine features a turbocharged 2.5 liter dual overhead cam 4-cylinder that is able to get 17 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway. The WRX STi has a 16.9 gallon tank and requires premium unleaded gasoline. The STi is an all-wheel drive vehicle that is one of the top performers in handling in its class and had the fastest time recorded at Nürburgring's racetrack. In fact, the WRX STi ran it at an unofficial time of 7 minutes and 55 seconds. This time was 1 second faster than the fastest production sedan, the Porsche Panamera Turbo. To achieve such a feat, the vehicle must tuned to the highest standard for this track. The zero to sixty miles per hour time is an impressive 5.0 seconds, considering that this engine has a 150 cubic inch displacement. The intercooled, turbocharged aluminum block can power the STi to run a quarter mile in 13.5 seconds and is fast enough to keep up with the V8 sport car line of other manufacturers. Depending on air drag variables, the top speed of the Impreza WRX STi is an estimated 155 to 158 miles per hour. To help reduce drag, the WRX STi has lowered the suspension by 0.2 inches. This combined with the tuned dampers has given the Subaru a smooth ride that has surpassed previous STis.
