NCCRI - Combat racism in Ireland

À propos de moi
NCCRI stands for The National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism. We were set up in 1998, just after the European Year Against Racism and have been working for the past ten years developing initiatives to combat racism and work towards a more inclusive, intercultural society in Ireland.

Ireland changed very rapidly over the last decade - the most recent census shows that 1 in 10 of our population is now non-Irish. This more diverse society brings both opportunities and challenges. We are working to ensure there is dialogue between the different ethnic, cultural and religious groups in Ireland which promotes understanding, cooperation and a sense of shared responsibility.

In an intercultural society diversity, equality and interaction are valued and there is strong sense of place and cohesion. 2008 is European Year of Intercultural Dialogue and we are coordinating lots of activities in Ireland. Go to our website to find out more about getting involved!

Sionan asked how much this page cost- it costs nothing to have a Bebo page.
He claims NCCRI was a waste of tax payers money- As part of the tax intake is made up of people who suffer racism, tax money is well spent with initiatives to fight it. Only someone who has never experienced racism- as many Irish did abroad while working, would describe the great work NCCRI did as 'silly PC rubbish'

Secondly, migrant workers are not the cause of wage deflation- thats greedy employers- building a strong vibrant trade union movement fights the race to the bottom in wages. The lack of jobs in Ireland was not caused by migrants. There was a crisis with jobs in the 1980s as I grew up and there were no migrants coming to Ireland. The recession has been caused by free market madness, greddy developers and bankers. Blaming it on migrants, fails to see the real criminals- banking execs and developers.
If this corrupt government stopped spending on prefabs for schools and started a countrywide building programmes we could have people in employment not on dole.
    Fight the real enemy.

  • Reporting Racist Incidents in Ireland

Since 2001 the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) has been monitoring and recording incidents relating to racism in Ireland.

The aim of the racism incident report mechanism is to learn more about how racism manifests itself in Irish society. This information is then used to make policy recommendations.

The incidents recorded are forwarded to the NCCRI by victims, witnesses and organisations working with Travellers, asylum seekers, refugees and migrants around the country.

On average, NCCRI receive between 80-100 incidents in a calendar year. The data that is generated highlight key issues and patterns relating to racism that need to be addressed. However, the data is not a comprehensive list of every racist incident that happens in Ireland. The NCCRI's experience would reflect international experience that there is a significant under-reporting of racist incidents.

The Racist Incidents Report procedure is an essential part of the work of the NCCRI for a number of reasons:
    • People can get information on how to redress and challenge racism
    • Data collected on incidents related to racism provides essential information to understand patterns of racism emerging in Ireland
    • The Data provides NCCRI and other agencies with the information to challenge racism in Ireland
    • This information is used to inform policy makers on the strategies needed to combat racism in Ireland
NCCRI are currently developing a campaign to promote the importance of reporting and recording incidents relating to racism and are interested in hearing from individuals and organisations who would like to share their experiences with us.

All information received by the NCCRI is treated with the strictest confidence. Visit our website for further details.

  • Our Approach

As cultural and ethnic diversity in Ireland continues to broaden, particularly as a consequence of inward migration, there are challenges to ensure that such significant change is negotiated successfully. The approach of the NCCRI is to combat racism and to promote intercultural approaches to integration through dialogue and consensus. The NCCRI seeks to work in partnership with a broad range of government and non-government bodies with a focus on long-term sustainable outcomes. This requires the NCCRI to adopt a strategic and forward-looking approach to our work based on evidence, participation and evaluation.

i have no hate against any other races but there is no jobs in ireland due to all the new people comin over 2008 is the most worst year in the history of ireland for unimployment and if it was just the irish in ireland then there would be enough jobs for the irish but instead emloyers are hireing people from other countries at a lower wage than the would have to pay the irish like i know someone who used to be a foreman on a building site and the let him go because there was no work and they were low on funds and the next day there was three polish people hired so that is why people are racist
