  • MSBA Colour Belt Open Championships

Sunday 3rd May saw the first MSBA Open Championships. :D A great competition was held within West Lothian’s newly built collage.

Junior and senior competitors from 17 schools, some as far away as Inverness, Inverurie and Forres battled it out for gold in some tough divisions. We had junior and senior individuals and team events and mixed continuous sparring for over 13 years with Taekwondo-do and Korean Kickboxing students going head to head.

The divisions were competitive but the attitudes were first class. With some senior officials commenting on the great spirit and etiquette shown by the competitors.

All in all a great day was had by all 180 competitors and over 300 spectators can’t wait till it’s even bigger and better on Sunday September 13th, see you there. :D

We would like to thank all competitors for entering and competing with the right spirit, also a massive thanks to all the umpires who gave up there time to help make it happen, thanks also to WL Collage for given us access to such wonderful facilities and to everyone who helped set up the event. Thank You :)

  • Systema, January 25th!

    Systema

The system is an easy to learn martial art that is ideal for people with or without martial experience. Students range from every day workers, students and is used by people that uphold the law. The system is a very practical and unique form of self-defence. It is also a very practical form of defense for women as it doesn't rely on strength or aggression.

Systema originates in the Special Opperations Unit (SOU) from within the Russian Spetsnaz (SAS equivalent) so you know that what you are learning is effective and practical. But it has a philosophy of non-aggression and teaches students to maintain control and a calm demeanour in the face of adversity.

Systema also has a lot of health practices to promote ligament and joint strenght, mobility and the ability to improve your health over all through a range of unique exercises.

Systema covers all aspects of combat including: punching and kicking, grappling, fighting from the ground, multiple attackers, knife and other weapon defense as well as the psychology of combat and conflict.

  • NEW CLASS, Systema

    HOW ABOUT THE SYSTEMA CLASS?

Systema comes from a Russian / European background. This means that are many differences from the approach of Oriental styles such as Karate or Kung Fu.

The most immediate difference that people will notice is that there is no bowing and very little formality in the class. Training is usually done in a circle or a group rather than in lines. The teacher has no special title and there is no foreign terminology. Classes tend to be relaxed in attitude, although focused in intent. The second major difference is that there is no training in form or kata. Aside from some of the exercises all training is done either with a partner or in groups of three or more. Our philosophy is that rather than practicing one particular technique, which is then applied into a situation, you are put into the situation and see what movements you can develop out of it. On the face of it this may sound daunting - "how will I know what to do?". In practice we find that everyone does something! We can then take that natural reaction - e.g. ducking a hook punch - and build a defensive strategy around it. This means that there is no need to learn new movements, merely to adapt what your body already does and knows.

This approach also means that there is no "syllabus" as such. You are not expected to learn certain moves in order to progress or to go through gradings. How do we measure progression? You will measure it yourself, by finding certain things easier, by becoming more efficient and effective in your movements, by becoming a fitter and healthier person.

Hello to Master Sutherland and all at Bathgate TKD. Just spent half an hour looking through your photo's, excellent. A big trip down memory lane for me. Stunned to see some photo's from Pyongyang in 1992, I think I might have some photo's from there in the loft, I will look them out and send you some soon.
All the very best and wishing you the best of luck for the future.
