- With a hugely expressive voice and an arsenal of powerful songs, Martha is a beguiling entertainer and a refreshingly different, new force in music. Martha is the daughter of folk legends Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle and sister of acclaimed singer songwriter Rufus Wainwright. Born in New York City and raised in Montreal, she spent her childhood immersed in music and often performing with her parents. She took the first step in her own recording career in 1998 when she contributed her song “Year of the Dragon” to her mother and aunt’s album The McGarrigle Hour. The same year she started singing back-up for her brother both live and on record.

Martha's Los Angeles show at the Troubadour WAS AMAZING! She sounds better than ever. The songs from "I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too" are great live! At one point during the evening, Martha invited her father, Loudon to join her onstage for a song. They sang "You Never Write, You Never Call." I found these two short clips on youtube. Screw Martha Wainwright, Rufus is the best! Her voice is totally vile, people say "Rufus Wainwright sounds stoned whenever he sings", that used to be partly because he was always stoned, I think there's a fine line as well between a unique voice (like Rufus Wainwright) and a dying lion with an awful cough.
I love the left-leg action on stage! Not as much as the performance of course. M x
