Main auditorium
The main auditorium will have a capacity of around 700 standing without the stage extended, 600 standing with the stage and a seated capacity of around 250. There's also a balcony with space for a further 85 people. This flexibility will make it ideal for a range of performances including bands, DJs, dance and drama. A powerful PA and comprehensive lighting rig will be built in and the auiditorium's acoustics have been a prime design consideration. Note that anyone can hire the hall; it's not just for arty types!
Cinema
The cinema will have a seated capacity of around 160 with space for wheelchairs, and will feature digital projectors and surround sound. The cinema will also act as a multi media performance area.
Recording studio
The much needed recording studio will include live rooms suitable for recording a variety of groups and bands, and a control room kitted out with the latest digital recording equipment.
Rehearsal areas
Mareel will have areas for a range of rehearsal uses including bands, DJs and drama groups. The sprung floors will make it suitable for dance groups too.
Multi media production suite
A well specified multi media production suite will be provided for film, TV, web design, animation, digital arts and music production.
Education facilities
Mareel has been designed with education in mind: the cinema can be used as a lecture theatre, the recording studio has a large control room to accommodate music technology students, the PA and lighting rig can be used to train event production students in situ, the multi media suite is suitable for training and there is a dedicated 30 seat teaching room/ 2nd cinema screen. Mareel will be one of the few facilities in the UK to offer 'on the job' training in a working venue!
Cafe bar
The split level cafe bar will offer a range of food and drink, with free Internet access and Wi Fi. Just the job for recharging your batteries and nights on the razz. A second floor development will incorporate designated education spaces and possibly small start-up units for creative industries

HIE confirm £965,000 of funding towards Mareel
HIE Press Release: Shetland centre for creative excellence receives HIE funding

Plans for the proposed centre of excellence for international creativity in Shetland have moved closer following a major investment of £965,000 from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Mareel is due to open in 2010 as a creative industries centre with a multi-purpose music, cinema, arts and education facility in Lerwick. Its development has been led by the Shetland Arts Development Agency (SADA) which was set up to encourage, support and develop activities in the creative industries.

The venue will provide opportunities for local musicians, filmmakers, dancers and other arts practitioners to develop their skills, as well as provide similar opportunities for sound, lighting and recording engineers and those with an interest in digital media.

As part of the developing cultural quarter in Lerwick where the new museum and archives, digital media businesses, architects and artists currently reside, Mareel will strengthen what is becoming an internationally competitive cluster of businesses built on innovation and creative talent. The venue will be available for use by businesses, community groups and for the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) Millennium Institute. Mareel will be an attraction for tourists as well as helping to promote arts and culture of the Highlands and Islands to the wider world.

An Economic Impact Study on Mareel was commissioned by HIE in April which highlighted that 52 full time jobs could be created. It found that the project would have positive effects on population, retention of young people and raising the profile of Shetland and the Highlands and Islands internationally in arts provision, building links with other countries.

Shetland is already renowned for music development and can be further nurtured to develop creativity within Mareel including music and sound engineering courses through UHI Millennium Institute. Other features of Mareel will include a multi media production suite for film, TV, web design and digital arts.

It is proposed that the venue will act as a hub from which outreach services can be offered to the most rural Shetland communities, bringing the cinema and audience development to remote islands.

Ann Black, HIE area manager based in Shetland, said: "The creative industries are one of the world's fastest growing sectors and increasingly important to the Highlands and Islands. Mareel will represent a facility for the Highlands and Islands to symbolise the unique culture of Shetland and we very much look forward to the development of the creative industries centre on our doorstep."

Katrina Wiseman, head of transformational projects at HIE Shetland area office said: "HIE is really pleased to have made a significant contribution to Mareel which is a hugely important project for Shetland, both culturally and economically. We have a vibrant community of creative people here in Shetland, and they all have the potential to achieve further wealth for the islands through high quality jobs in a world class creative industries venue in a rural area."

Gwilym Gibbons, Director of Shetland Arts Development Agency said: "Shetland Arts is proud to have HIE as a key partner in this project along side Shetland Islands Council and Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund. Its shows a commitment to a new and important sector for Shetland that is the creative industries and an acknowledgment of the creative and cultural assets that Shetland has to draw upon".

Shetland Islands Council to vote on future of Mareel - Wed 25th June
The Shetland Islands Council (SIC) are due to vote on a ‘make or break’ decision regarding the future of Mareel this Wednesday (25th June 2008).

http://www.shetlandtoday.co.uk/index...

At the last full council meeting 6 weeks ago councilors voted to review their £5.3 million financial commitment to the project. Since then Shetland Arts has been working with senior SIC staff to complete the review, to be presented on Wednesday morning.

The Mareel project has secured millions of pounds of external funding, inc. £2.12 million from the Scottish Arts Council’s Lottery Fund and the SIC have already invested around £750,000. Building work is due to start this year but if the council vote to delay the project further or withdraw funding it is unlikely to go ahead.

The meeting is open to the public (around 70 people attended the last one) so if you wish to show your support come along to the Town Hall @ 9am on Wed 25th June

Load of rubbish, complete wast of money. The SIC needs to wise up and start watching their pennies. Why do we need this when Shetland has several top class village halls and I was recently at the garrison watching a film and it was splendid.

If it must be bulit why not scale it down and spend less. Where is Shetland going to be in several years time when all the money is gone?
