- Make the millionaires pay for their crisis! Vote SSP!

- Global depression. Climate chaos. Billions starving. Why?
Most of the world’s problems today can be traced back to a single cause. Greed. For decades, the rich went on a feeding frenzy. They piled up profits galore. They devoured the world’s resources and ignited global warming. They grabbed more and more wealth for themselves at the expense of everyone else.
One per cent of the UK population now own 34 times as much wealth as the bottom 50 per cent. Never in human history has so much been owned by so few.
With more cash than they could ever dream of spending, the rich went on a gambling binge. Instead of using their wealth to create jobs and fuel the real economy, they squandered trillions in the casinos of global capitalism.
Now the orgy of greed has turned sour. But who will pay the price?
The Scottish Socialist Party has launched a European-wide Make Greed History Campaign. The reckless rich caused this crisis – and they must foot the bill.

Make Greed History - Vote SSP!
Global depression.
How the rich caused the slump
With more cash than they could ever dream of spending, the rich went on a gambling binge. Instead of using their wealth to create jobs and fuel the real economy, they squandered trillions in the casinos of global capitalism.
Now the orgy of greed has turned sour. But who will pay the price?
The Scottish Socialist Party has launched a European-wide Make Greed History Campaign. The reckless rich caused this crisis – and they must foot the bill.
Why we need a wealth tax to create jobs
In Europe today, the wealthiest one per cent of the population own liquid assets worth $10 trillion dollars.
A modest, one-off wealth tax of just 10 per cent would generate a trillion dollars to create eight million jobs across Europe.
Scotland’s share of that tax would amount to £6.5 billion – enough to create and sustain 80,000 jobs over the next three years, with an average annual salary of £25,000.
We could build tens of thousands of new homes to rent. We could reduce class sizes by employing thousands more teachers and learning assistants. We could insulate every home in Scotland.
Call it a ‘Wealth Tax’, call it a ‘Crisis Tax’ – or even call it a ‘Greed Tax’. It would be a mighty step out of recession, paid for by those who caused the crisis.
The Scottish Socialist Party stands for a green socialist Scotland in a green socialist Europe.

So is it just me, or is the new election broadcast a bit f-ing morbid? I understand he's trying to make a point about bankers' greed, but it doesn't seem like the way to woo voters to me.

We should take the banks into public ownership, but that means buying them as cheap as possible - and firing the bankers in charge, not keeping them on. We should also use the banks for social loans, like a credit union and ensure no one loses their homes cos of the greed of people like Goodwin etc. Unfortunately thats not the nationalisation this govts done.
-
Frank Martin5/6/09If the SSP had suggested nationalising banks a year ago people would have laughed at us. I certainly would have thought it was a bit too ambitious. Now it kinda seems to have happened, but yet not happened.
-
Che Mitchell5/5/09continued.....I don't think letting the banks crumble would be a good idea either I mean jobs can be saved by nationalistion. but bailing out the heads and big bankers like Fred Goodwin was a robbery and a disgrace.Taking the money from the poor and then giving it to the rich....If you kept a nationalised banking system like Cuba or Vuenizala (bad spelling)it would be fair and greedless, plus look at what Evo Morales did in Bolivia...He natioanlised Oil and cocca beans,a big import to the West, and now the people of Bolivia are feeling the effect of rich job oppurtunites and living standards have raised cause they've got money to spend..apart from the old days when uncle same would give them shite for it or jus put a dictator in like pinochet or...some other south american crack-pot.
-
Che Mitchell5/5/09Am not saying that if all the rich leave it would anarchy or the downfall of modern society or anything big but there would be a lack of job oportunities if you want banks to buy the toxic or crumbling banks like RBS, and at the same time i see no point in the bourgeoisie conrtoling the economy at all.

Mitch, I can't really see a few rich nobs leaving the country to be a great issue, the money they 'contribute' in tax is nothing compared to the actual productive hard work put in by the rest of Scotland's population. A millionaire's cheque will not run a bus factory or build houses, but many of the hundred-thousand-odd unemployed, including many builders and car factory workers, easily could. Furthermore, there are plenty of people who have had their homes reposessed by the bankers who 'own' a share in them, and they could do with the mansions and holiday homes left unoccupied by the deserting rich to stay in. Personally I think bailing out or nationalising the banks was the worst possible idea. They should have been allowed to collapse so as to be removed entirely, such that their system could be replaced by responsible resource allocation to useful companies.

Well the top rate of tax used to be 60%, and that was under Thatcher who wasn't exactly against millionaires. Putting a 10% tax across Europe gives them no room to evade and avoid paying taxation.

50p tax on every £1 the rich make,it's a good system for the time being but look what happened in the 70's....they all moved abroad to places like Monaco,San Marino and Luxemburg etc.... Nationalisation of public transport, energy and some people might dissagree but Banking (I mean the majority of them that don't include Northern Rock and RBS)might help end greed to an extent...anybody wan't to comment on it???
