  • New Autobiography by Melissa Gilbert

NEW YORK, May 21, 2008 – Simon Spotlight Entertainment (SSE), an imprint of Simon & Schuster, announced today that it will publish a book by Melissa Gilbert. Best-known as Laura "half-pint" Ingalls on the series Little House on the Prairie, Melissa Gilbert has a permanent place in the hearts of women of all ages.

The currently-untitled book will feature behind-the-scene stories from her years on the Little House set as well as her time spent in Brat-Pack Hollywood, including her relationship with Rob Lowe (to whom she was engaged). Gilbert will discuss being an adopted child, the loss of her father at age 11, and her battle with both alcohol and failed relationships. But thanks to a great sense of humor, her resilience, and a fantastic support system, Gilbert has found happiness and stability in her life. Gilbert served as president of the Screen Actors Guild for two terms. She currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of the Children's Hospice and and Palliative Care Coalition, where she works directly with chronically and terminally ill children to provide them with care and comfort. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband, Bruce Boxleitner.

Melissa Gilbert said "I am writing this book to share the story of my life. Simply put, I have been very blessed but I have also been through difficult struggles and painful tragedies. My hope is that people with similar life experiences will find comfort in my story by realizing they are not alone."

Jennifer Bergstrom, Vice President and Publisher of SSE, said "Melissa Gilbert is funny, down-to-earth, and has an entertaining and inspiring tale to tell. Most importantly, it will be told with Melissa's great humor and warmth. I adore her and think readers will too."

Jennifer Bergstrom at SSE negotiated the deal with Dan Strone, CEO of Trident Media Group, which includes world rights. The book is scheduled for publication in Spring 2009.

National Hospice Foundation Gala and Awards - "A Red Carpet Affair," Award Recipients: Melissa Gilbert, Mary Fisher, and the inaugural Art Buchwald Spirit Award Friday, April 11, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm Omni-Shoreham Hotel, Regency Ballroom, Washington, DC. Additional conference info available at http://www.nhpco.org/MLC2008.

  • Melissa Gilbert cast in "Little House On The Prairie musical.

MINNEAPOLIS — Melissa Gilbert is returning to "Little House on the Prairie" _ but this time playing the mother of her character from the popular television series.

Gilbert, 44, will play "Ma" Ingalls in a musical version of the "Little House" books that will open at the Guthrie Theater this summer. The actress portrayed Laura, the signature character in the '70s TV series that starred Michael Landon.

Kara Lindsay will play Laura in the musical. The role of "Pa" Ingalls will be played by Steve Blanchard, who starred for eight years on Broadway as the Beast in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast."

The musical is based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories about her homesteading family.

Previews start July 26, with opening night set for Aug. 15. Performances run through Oct. 5. Single tickets go on sale June 27.

  • Cast Members~~ What they went on to do after LHOTP

    Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls)

It was for her earnest, memorable portrayal of Laura that Gilbert became the youngest person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Gilbert has made a few feature film appearances, but the majority of her work has been in television. She most often opted for roles as suffering, historically significant teenagers, such as in The Miracle Worker in 1979, The Diary of Anne Frank in 1980, and Splendor in the Grass in 1981. She remained prolific and eventually graduated to adult roles, including Choices in 1986 and A Family of Strangers in 1993. In addition, there were a few failed series attempts, such as Little House: A New Beginning in 1982, Stand By Your Man in 1992, and Sweet Justice in 1994. In 2001, Gilbert was voted in as president of the Screen Actors Guild, winning a second two-year term in 2003.

During her teen years, Gilbert dated actors Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe. In 1988, she married actor and producer Bo Brinkman. They had one son, Dakota Paul (Cody), and later divorced. In 1995, she married actor Bruce Boxleitner. They have one son, Michael Garrett, born in 1995 and named after the late actor Michael Landon.

    Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson)

She currently does charity work in addition to performance. She focuses on AIDS issues and on child abuse, speaking frequently for and lobbying with the group PROTECT. In 2004, she came out as an incest survivor on Larry King Live. Although she refused to name her attacker, she clarified that it was neither of her parents. She also revealed that the attacker was apprehended, but the courts were unable to prepare charges as the statute of limitations had run out.

Alison's father, Thor Arngrim, was a well-known Hollywood manager. Her mother, Norma MacMillan, was a well-known voice actress, who provided the voices for characters on Casper the Friendly Ghost, Gumby, Davey and Goliath, and many other beloved animated programs. Her brother Stefan Arngrim was also a child actor.

Alison married Robert Paul Schoonover, a musician on November 6, 1993. They live in Los Angeles.

Alison tied with Danielle Spencer ('Dee' on What's Happening!!) for "Character Most in Need of a Time-out" award on the 2006 TV Land Awards for her role on Little House on The Prairie.

In one of her stand-up routines, she described playing Nellie on Little House on The Prairie as "Like having PMS for seven years." On May 26, 2007 she made an appearance at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival signing autographs.

    Karen Grassle (Caroline Ingalls~Ma)

Her first acting job in New York City was in the Gingham Tree, and she began calling herself “Gabriel Tree”. Using this name, she auditioned for the role of the mother, Caroline Ingalls, in Little House on the Prairie, and won the part against 47 other candidates. Michael Landon convinced her to revert to her birth name.

The series ran for nine seasons, from 1974 to 1983.

She was married to Leon Russom. In 1982, she married J. Allen Radford, and later Dr. Scott T. Sutherland in 1991. After the series ended, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where she remained active in theater. She would later become co-founder of Sante Fe’s Resource Theatre Company, also serving as the art director. Eventually, she moved back to California, where she lives with her daughter.

In 2006, she performed in Driving Miss Daisy in the starring role of Miss Daisy at the Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

  • Have you changed your opinion? (for the long-time fans)

    Annika S by Annika S
For those who have been fans of the show for a long time.

Have you changed your favourite characters (or episodes) over the years, or do you still have the same opinion as when you first started watching?

I've been watching the show for 28 years, and although I still like the same characters now as I did as a child, I also seem to find more and more characters I really like.
