Ladyfest Cork <LadyfestCork>

LadyFest Cork is a community based, not-for-profit event. It is intended to celebrate and encourage the talents of women of all ages, colour, creed, background and sexuality, while highlighting the inequalities that sadly still exist in today’s world. The festival will feature bands, artists, filmmakers, workshops and more. The core organisers of LadyFest are women, but everyone is encouraged to attend and volunteer. Our aim is to create a positive, all-inclusive forum for discussion, performance and celebration!

Ladyfest Cork says:

"Come to The New Bloods in The Whisky on Sunday!" (29 weeks ago) me too!

Herstory
The origins of Ladyfest developed from the DIY movement combined with inclusive feminist philosophy. Ladyfest drew inspiration from Riot Grrrl, an early 1990s grassroots movement also originating in Olympia, that put a feminist face on male-dominated punk rock culture. The first ever Ladyfest was conducted in Olympia, Washington in August, 2000 with over 2000 people attending. Ladyfests have now taken place in hundreds of cities and towns around the world.

  • Ladyfest Cork!

Ladyfest Cork is taking place April 25th to 27th 2008

The line-up is confirmed for Ladyfest Cork April 2008 and we have an eclectic mix of rockin' ladies from all over Ireland and Europe coming together to let loose and have a girl riot in Cork this Spring. We want to celebrate how many fab female artists there are by getting together a few of whom we think are the best for a whole weekend of music, art, performance, film and workshops, nice one! Bands are travelling from France, the UK, Holland, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford to come together to celebrate another famed Ladyfest weekend. We have music tastes that range from punk, pop, rock, rap, to alternative music soundscapes and psychedelic instrumental post-punk.

Ladyfest Cork will put it's own stamp on the long history of Ladyfests that have taken place all over the world, ours will be a rocking feminist Do-It-Yourself not-for-profit community based festival mixed with good for the soul yoga, belly dancing, permaculture, chart your cycle, body image, film screenings, discussions and chill out areas to get to know your fellow Ladyfesters! Our Visual Art exhibition will showcase art, performance and video from talented female artists along with music, giant origami(!) and zine making workshops. You can touch stuff, paint stuff, stick stuff to stuff and generally make a mess in our collaborative public art projects.
There's so much to say, so many issues- we hope that this weekend will serve to provoke thought around these issues and create a weekend long space where these feminist ideas can be explored and brought to the fore. Cos y'know feminism isn't really an f-word, its just about us all trying to get along and us all getting a chance to be heard.

Its the little ripples that make a difference. Go to a gig, a workshop or a performance and learn something new, while at the same time contributing towards the Domestic Violence Centre and Sexual Violence Centre. All profits made by Ladyfest Cork will go to our chosen charities.

We hope you'll enjoy it! Now go turn that music up loud and have a dance!!!

Tonnes of grá from the Ladyfest Ladies of Cork

  • Is Ladyfest Sexist?

A common argument we, the organisers of Ladyfest, have faced is that Ladyfest is sexist itself, and discriminates against men. But Ladyfest is not about excluding men, it’s about creating a space for women – because it’s just not there, especially in music. If you look at the listings of practically any festival, male performers completely dominate the list. Typically women make up only about 10 – 15% of festivals, and that’s on an international scale. A typical gig in Cork usually consists of all male-membered bands (with the rare exception) and indeed the crowd is usually dominated by men too.

If you defined a Manfest as a festival where maybe 90% of the performers were all male, then in a sense you could call most festivals a Manfest. People often argue that the reason why festivals/gigs consist mostly of male performers is that there just aren’t that many (good) female performers out there. Well Ladyfest wants to prove this wrong by celebrating and displaying existing female talent and providing a space where women feel comfortable to perform without being objectified or considered a token girl, or a novelty. Organising Ladyfest has taught us that there really are so many amazing female performers out there, that sadly seem to be invisible. Can we really be called sexist for dedicating one weekend of the year to promoting and celebrating these talents? And who knows - maybe Ladyfests around the world can inspire younger girls to learn an instrument, start a band, and in the future perform in a festival that is equally represented by women and men.

We at Ladyfest Cork do not seek to exclude men. We want people of all genders to come along. Ladyfest concentrates on female musicians but that's not to say there's no men in some of the bands, and many guys we’ve met have been completely supportive of our project. After all, men can be feminists too! The only exception is that a couple of workshops may be female-only - not because we're anti-men, but because they may only be relevant to women, or may be on emotive subjects such as sexuality and violence. There won’t be many all-female workshops, and although we have not yet finalised our workshops for Ladyfest Cork there has been male-only workshops in other Ladyfests around the world.

It is not our intention to alienate or exclude men from Ladyfest Cork. As music is so traditionally male, in every genre, our mission is to provide a forum in which all members of the community can celebrate, showcase and encourage the artistic and organizational talents of women and girls, and raise some money for charity while we’re at it!
