- KINGS OF CONCRETE 25th & 26th JULY 2009 Wood Quay
Kings of concrete events are a fusion of urban sports, music & street art. Its a gathering of like-minded people, in essence a collaboration of skaters, BMX'ers, bladers, artists, musicians & generally groovy folk. Everyone's welcome to come along & participate in the fun or just relax & enjoy the spectacle.
There are ramp competitions for skating, blading, BMX"ing as well as a break dancing comp, an Ollie comp, a game of skate, hackysack & loads of free giveaways on the day. The weird, wonderful & colorful backdrop is provided compliments of a number of graffiti artists working on various pieces throughout the duration of the event. The Beats are provided by a combination of live acts & Dj"s. Including Electronic act Lectrosoul. And Choice Cuts Dj"s Laying down Beats For the Day. Big Up To the Worries Outernational sound system.. You guys Rock

Last Year, Thanks and Friends
Developing the Kings of Concrete from an idea to a tangible event has been a fascinating journey.
The road so far has not been without its hurdles and unfortunately the wheels are frequently at risk of coming off - That"s just life.
However along the way you meet so many interesting people who are in full support of what you"re trying to do. People who selflessly offer over their time, energy and input for the cause without expecting anything in return. Without the help we received from so many this event simply wouldn"t have happened.
Those people deserve a mention - well actually they deserve more but a mention will have to suffice for the meantime. In no specific order - A Huge Thanks to:
All the Dj"s and Live Acts
Lectrosoul - Richie Rock, Warren K, Marc Sound, Sean B - They were Awesome - check out www.lectrosoul.bebo.com www.myspace.com/lectrosoul
Mark Murphy from Choice Cuts, GEM, FOnitek, Ricardo from Remedy and Billy Scurry for all their help and sweet sounds

Special thanks to Jeremy from project-77.com for all the help with the website - Lovin your Work
Also a big up to Dave (CMX) for mc"ing and organising the breakers - tied everything together nicely
Photographers - Paul and Derek - check out their work in the gallery
Wallace Construction for building the two 12ft x 8ft graf boards - Nice One
Shane for salvaging loads of graf boards from a skip in temple bar - Sweet One
Ciaran from cubedclothing for sorting out stickers and t-shirts at the last minute
Rog, Grant, Stef, Pope, Ronani, Nob, Snowy, Mark - for supporting the cause
Frank and co from CB Skateparks for the ramp
Munchies - Baz from the West Cork Grill and Mark from The Happy Pear
Mary Wier from Dublin City Council for her ongoing support and helping to make sure this event happened

Whats It All about..?
What"s it all about?
Skateboarding, Blading, BMXing and breakdancing are all evolving urban sports that have established themselves as favoured youth activities on every continent across the globe.
For a variety of reasons this faction of youth culture has remained largely unsupported and underdeveloped in Ireland. For too long we have had to find street spots off our own bat just to participate in the sports we are most passionate about. These spots typically have been unofficial and illegal. All too often security have removed skaters abruptly calling to a halt an otherwise perfect day.
Subsequently we have had to become more resourceful and find new and interesting places to play. Most of these sites were privately owned buildings, centres of commerce and government offices. As we identified new spots the security grew in both presence and voracity...
Dark days for Irish youth culture ensued! If the security didn"t prevent skateboarding the permanent skate stopping architecture did and to top it all off insurance for Irish skate parks has been near impossible to secure.
Thankfully those dark days will soon be behind us. Due to the efforts of progressive politicians, active skate lobbyists (check out our links page) and some modern thinking in local authorities there has been a revolutionary breakthrough elevating the status of these activities to their rightful place in Irelands alternative sports portfolio.
In 2006 the Irish government allocated E2million to develop 21 concrete skate parks around the country. These facilities will allow skaters / bladers / BMX"ers to develop and fine tune their skills. It will foster up and coming talent and give people the opportunity to become as good as their contemporaries anywhere in the world.
Kings of concrete is a celebration of this recent transformation. We hope to help build and sustain a platform to promote the wonderful variety of activities available for youth culture in Ireland today such as skating, inline blading, BMX, break dancing and graffiti amongst others.
What"s Next?
Our aim is to develop The Kings of Concrete into a travelling micro-festival that will tour Irelands skate parks annually. The intention is to produce events that nurture and encourage the recent trend away from TV, video games and barstool sports towards more exciting activities that are growing in popularity and availability.
Currently we are in talks with a number of sponsors and venues with a view to scheduling 3 events for the coming year. We will be Returning To Wood Quay in Dublin, Where last year we had an unbelievable day to remember
The continuing support from the community is vital to its success. So far it has been overwhelming and we would like to thank everyone for that - you all know who you are - Thanks!
See you this Summer 2007
