October 2008
Hi all - I want to talk about a few good and bad things and I want to hear other peoples thoughts as I have some good ideas.
I will start off with a sadly uneventful report on the state of the Keep Appleby Beautiful community group for this month.
As for K.A.B: There has not been much happening in terms of large scale community activity at the moment, however, me and my partner in cleanup crime have been going solo in a couple of rubbish cleaning sprees around the area.
We filled one bag of rubbish from the mid section of Otepuni Gardens, three shopping bags from the old school grounds, traced a trail of industrial rubbish to Pac'n'Save (I will be reporting on that to them about their waste methods) and collected a box of beer full of rubbish on the way home from work the other day. =)
As for membership, We have only one extra member since the article on the Wall painting, but we are hopeing to have another new official member join in November.
He lives on Ythan street and has some good ideas to contribute.
Summer should bring better photos for uploading to the site and good gardening weather.
On some good news
I watched a boy with his friends carry a empty drink bottle for 200m past waterways and plenty of bushes he could have thrown in in to. So I said it was good of him to put it in a bin when he did.
On some not so good news,
I found the 'stash' spot for the lazy local pamphlet delivery person, there would be around 1000 undelivered pamphlets hidden in the garden in the old school on Crinnan Street that I'm sure the businesses and the Police would love to hear about(see Photos), pity the young ones are the ones doing the littering.
I think for some Its cool to not care, and for others its too much effort.
In Otepuni Gardens; due to a BAD rubbish bin design there is rubbish blowing around. This is because the opening of the bin prevents bigger items and hands from going in without touching the sides. Also, Unfortunatly, there has been some graffitti on one of the seats. Combine this with the rubbish problem and it really doesnt compliment the beautiful flowers and trees ithe gardeners do so well to cultivate.
So I would like your support to put to the Council the Idea of putting up a new rubbish bin and design and include in the request a rubbish bin in the vicinity of the dairy and fish and chip shop on Crinnan Street to try remove some of the Rubbish from around the school and the Bus-stops on Ythan Street.
There is also some new tagging in south invercargill one is near the new walking track off Elles rd behind the Hospital and more on the Rugby grounds near KFC on the Clubrooms.
Therefore, I would also like the council to fix their graffiti plan because I don't think they are photographing and keeping a record of the location of each tag before removal. I keep seeing the same ones appearing and there are common words and symbols in a lot of them. I think that if the police and councils can work together and catch these vandals/Gangs of youth criminals then they would be doing scoiety a favour now and in the future.
Well done to everyone who recycles each week it makes the recycle mans job a bit easier if the bins arent so full.
On that note; I also want to see our recycling efforts put to better use, a lot of our recycling is shipped overseas to be recycled, I only think they sort it here. I want to know WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY they make from selling it? and what do we get in return for using our time and NZ's clean water to wash all our items... Recycling doesnt have to be just your glass cardboard and plastic either, at the moment Donna Peterson In Invercargill City Council is doing a huge spring anti-green waste at our dump campaign and has ordered 'no green waste' stickers on all of Invercargill's wheelie bins. Alot of money has also been spent on education and public notices in the paper, one method of reducing compostable material was suggested to grasscylce and not use a0 Comments 184 weeks

Did you know 50% of the domestic waste in landfills during this time of the year is "Green Waste"!?0 Replies 190 weeks
This waste, when dumped at a refuse site, not only increases methane (a greenhouse gas) due to the anaerobic decay but contributes to an acidic environment within the tip and dissolves heavy metals. This solution of acids and metals (along with various other chemicals) that excretes from the rubbish "cell" is called "leechate" and pollutes waterways and estuaries. Please help reduce the amount of “waste" that clogs up our precious landfills by starting up your own compost bin.
NOTE: (This is far more effective and tidier than a heap of grass clippings in the back corner of your garden)
To make you can use wood, bricks, stack of old tyres an old bath tub, corrugated Iron or buy one from your local hardware store.
Ideally it will be vertically stackable/collapsible or have pitch fork access on one side.
Be sure to mix "brown waste" such as leaves, cardboard inc (damp - pizza boxes, toilet rolls & egg cartons) , straw, saw dust (non treated wood), vacuum dust and cold wood ash with the "Green waste".
This is compost food (carbon) and keeps the acid levels right for the micro organisms to grow and conditions not too harsh for the little worms.
* A good idea is to have two bins side by side, that way one can be maturing while the other is decomposing.
* It is very important to turn the brew every few months and hopefully by the time you fill bin1, bin2 the (maturing one) will be ready for your garden or pot plants. (you could even sell it as potting mix)
You can tell it’s ready because it will have an earthy smell and will be brown and grainy. This may take up to 5-6months but can be reduced to 3 if turned and managed well.
* If you don’t produce enough waste for a large compost bin, you could consider a worm farm.
* Start with a well drained base, poke or stir up the dirt before placing the bins and put some thick sticks or breathable free-draining matter as the base.
* If you compost starts to smell it may not be getting enough air. - To help aid this; make sure there are holes on the side and/or you insert spacers such as small tree branches or pvc plastic pipes (with holes) horizontally as your bin deepens to allow the mix to breathe.
* Make sure to also COVER your compost to keep valuable moisture and heat in, and vermin out! - On that note it is not recommended to put meat or dairy products in the mix for this reason as this attracts rodents and stray cats.
* Always keep your compost damp. Water is an essential ingredient in the composting process, but dont over do it! You dont want the mix to be gluggy or so cold that nothing happens.
Remember: Greens + Browns + Water + Air = Compost
PLEASE also NOTE: That; when running your Motorised lawn mower, you dont have to have it on MAX throttle, not only will you annoy the neighbours if you leave it too late in the afternoon, but you burn twice as much oil and fuel in the process.
A few tips: Turn the revs down when unloading the catcher and check your oil regularly .
AND let the engine warm up before getting in to the cutting you'll be surprised how much more power and fuel efficiency you get out of a warm mower.
Happy Gardening.

Good day to mow the lawns and get into the garden.
