Evlimate TV - quote 3
"Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television"
by Jerry Mander
The Replacement of Human Images by Television - Chapter XII
"When you are watching TV, you are not daydreaming, or reading, or looking out of the window at the world. You have opened your mind, and someone else's daydreams, have entered. The images come from distant places your have never been, depict events you can never experience, and are sent by people your don't know and have never met. Once their images are inside you, they imprint upon your memory. They become yours." p. 240
-----
As I am reading this book, I am coming to see just how much power mainstream media has over society in calling it to conformity in thought, attitudes, and behavior. It is really sad that so many people give TV so much of their time, rather than experiencing and exploring the world from themselves.

"Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television"

Advertising: The Standard-Gauge Railway - Chapter VI
"Advertising, then serves to future the movement of humans into artificial environments by narrowing the conception of diversity to fit the framework of commodities while unifying people within this conception. The result is a singularly channeled mentality, nicely open to receiving commercial messages, ready to confuse brand diversity with diversity itself, and to confuse human need with the advertiser's need to sell commodities." p. 126
"By substituting for a greater diversity of experiences and unifying everyone with it, it (TV) aids commercial efficiency. With all people confined to the same mental and physical condition, a single advertising or political voice appropriate to the common mood can influence everyone."
p. 132

Walling of Awareness - Chapter III
"Living within artificial, reconstructed, arbitrary environments that are strictly the products of human conception, we have no way to be sure that we know what is true and what is not. We have lost context and perspective. What we know is what other humans tell us.
Therefore, whoever controls the processes of re-creation, effectively redefines reality for everyone else, and creates the entire world of human experience, our field of knowledge. We become subject to them. The confinement of our experience becomes the basis of their control of us.
The role of the media in all this is to confirm and validity of the arbitrary world in which we live. The role of television is to project that world, via images, into our heads, all of us at the same time." p. 68

"TV is just another propaganda tool used be the elite to push the population into conformity and limit their ability to think critically and creatively and act responsibly in the world" -- Kayakman
a cool vid at TED related to "Walling of Awareness" in terms of how we build space:

I stayed in Gyomro near Budapest in 2001 for 4 weeks, I was engaged to a Hungarian but we split up. Hungary is beautiful. I`ve been twice and Slovakia once.
WOW! I love to kayak too. Have you ever been kayaking in the boundary waters of northern MN?
