- Nick Williams aka Karnel was born and bred in West Auckland, New Zealand.
Karnel's family had a great passion for music and growing up he was heavily influenced by the musical stylings of the Cook Islands. Karnels father Pat, is his greatest influence having played in a number of bands since his own youth. Pat continues with his love of music as he works tirelessly with the community through showcasing the burgeoinging talents of young people. This passion for music was passed on to Karnel who is a promising rap artist, competent with the guitar and drums. Karnel studied at Massey High School and while there was part of a band called New Era.
In his 7th form year after many trials Karnel made the choice to move to Gisborne with his older brother Jay Williams aka Phoenix. Here he studied at Gisborne Boys High School. This complete transformation worked out best for Karnel who really found himself while in Gisborne. Although in a small town Karnel thrived and his passion for rap was ignited. Karnel worked collaboratively with his brother Phoenix on a project called M2K which harnessed the unbridled gifts of primary school aged children by nurturing them with both life skills and performing arts.
During Summer of 2003 Karnel worked on a project created by Gisborne Mayor Ming Foon and the Gisborne council in promoting sunscreen and safety messages for kids of all ages. In 2003 both brothers formed the Youth Performing Arts troupe HIGHER LEARNING which was based on the 4 main kaupapa No Drugs No Suicide No Racism No Passengers. In that time they commanded a group of rappers, singers, dancers and drama students from Gisborne who performed at various events and claimed a number of followers. Their positive messages of hope resonated through all their performances. Karnel assisted in the production of their album- People.
At the same time Karnel worked as the Raise up and Represent Youth Coordinator for YMCA Gisborne and was responsible for organising youth events and promoting healthy living. The focus of raise up was to create a safe environment for kids to come and focus their energies into something less destructive and worthwhile. Karnel coordinated one of the biggest youth events in Gisborne- The Bling Rage which hosted over 800 young people.
In 2005 Karnel was driven by the desire to come back to Auckland and raise his game. He enrolled at Excel Performing Arts school and while studying there created the Higher Learning West Auckland team. The 'Wolfpack' as they were aptly named followed the same kaupapa and reached out in much the same way as their G Town counterparts. In their first year they performed at Pacific in the Park and Pasifika joined by their Gisborne family. One of the highlights for this small team was the Baystyles 05. Karnel produced their album Culture.
At the end of 05 Karnel graduated from Excel with a Diploma in Drama. Karnel is the first mainstream artist to sign to Nikari Studios in West Auc

QUICK BIO
Phoenix nzyp was established in 2007 by Matua Jay Williams to advance and develop performing arts students at secondary school.
Auditioning and selecting the best from every school. Phoenix NZYP was born.
Alongside Jay were friends who also shared the same passion and love for young people and were also masters in the art form e.g Drama, Singing and Dancing.
Throughout 2007 the focus was about building leaders and role models, for them to focus on getting better and excelling more then they would in a general school tution. Phoenix NZYP has performed in front of thousands of people not just in NZ. 2008 saw NZYP cross the ditch to Australia to perform for over 20 schools in the Gold Coast area. Experience was awesome but also inspirational to those who witnessed them perform. 2009 brings a new bred of era

MATUA JAY WILLIAMS
The seed of Phoenix NZYP started back in 1993 after I left Avondale College to join a group called Y-One. I realised at that point that mainstream education had failed to provide me with the right tools for life I was often labelled as ' stupid', 'dumb', would never amount to anything etc by teachers who were not only unprofessional, but useless. They couldn't see the diamond in the rough! I was tired of the stereotypes that Polynesians were only good at sport and that we lacked the concentration and capacity to achieve well academically. At that point the decision to go to University became the best option! With little academic success I applied for teachers college at Waikato University and was blessed to get in. The fear of failure never crossed my mind at that point because I knew that I had to do something to change the future of the next generation by being a teacher of understanding and insight. When our kids talk about the street I know what they are saying, when they share their frustrations of education I connect to their stories and when they get hurt by people putting them down for making a stand I too feel that pain. Some educationalists are either out dated or riddled with institutionalised racism across cultures - the one size fits all isn't the answer to the problems of educational failures and barriers to learning. Through the performing arts I work out a system that helps to provide a positive environment that is both conducive to learning and contextualized. I have found PHOENIX NZYP to be the most enjoyable and life changing experience spiritually inand emotionally. To see the personal victories and developments of dividuals, teams and families is a testament to the success of our program. If we as a community don't stand up and speak then there will continue to be drunk drivers on our roads, young people taking their lives and division among races. NZYP is a vehicle for assisting to develop those essential skills for life, such as, effective communication, time management, personal confidence. NZYP is part of the solution, not the problem! By supporting us you make a stand for the generation here and the generations to come!0 Comments 66 days
