“A one-man British invasion.” – Hollywood Reporter

“...Radio programmers don't have the imagination of Jamie Cullum, who is bursting with music and whose music busts down barriers. Categories can't contain his talent.” – San Francisco Chronicle

“...energetic, feisty, risky, a 5-foot-4 bantamweight with spiky brown hair and the attitude of a punk rocker or hip-hopper.” – Associated Press

“Cullum possesses a streetwise, maverick spirit, one which brashly shakes up established rules with boyish, rock-star flare and a good dose of healthy ego.” – Jazziz

“goose-bump good...fresh and hip.” – Associated Press

“Cullum has tons of talent, and while he borrows from a wide range of influences in pop, rock and jazz, the end result is distinctive and irresistible.” – Associated Press

Well here I am chipping away at a new album in the sunshine skirted by unfamiliar surroundings. I’ve spent most of my recording life thus far enveloped by the safety blanket of my home; a mere 10 minutes or so from where I could drink a beer on a familiar sofa and listen to mixes on a stereo I have been listening to records on since I was a teenager. Sometimes you need to take away those anchors to produce something that feels like you have truly moved forward. With the world of music in its current state, wounded, ubiquitous, bulging with bands and new acts, exciting and bewildering – all I feel like doing is getting on with making a record that feels like a true challenge to my abilities. Suffice to say I listen at the end of each day to the noises created, driving in the rented car and burst with excitement as I hear the music which sounds at once part of me and outside of me. Excuse me for sounding overly portentous but that feeling of creating always gets me very high.

I read today that the death toll of the Burmese cyclone has risen above 22,000 with another 41,000 people still missing. It is an unimaginable level of devastation in a beautiful country already blighted by a million problems. I will be donating to the British Red Cross who were on the ground soon after the storm hit.

Much love to you all.

Lisa's Blog - Meeting Jamie at the Hollywood Bowl!
am not the type of person who typically enters contests. I guess I have a skeptical nature. Plus I’ve never won anything before aside from the annual bake-off at my office. However, I thought that the Bebo contest comparing Jamie Cullum to Sir Winston Churchill was a brilliantly funny and clever concept and so I decided to enter not only because I thought it would be great to see Jamie Cullum perform at one of the only gigs he’s doing in the US this year and to have the chance to meet him, but also because of the interesting creative challenge. One night my husband Sean and I set out to compose a poem that would capture the similarities between the two. We think that Sir Winston Churchill is one of the most important figures in modern history, and also we are enormous fans of Jamie Cullum - but too be honest, I was not sure that there were going to be any real similarities other than the Blenheim Palace connection (Jamie’s live DVD was made at Blenheim, birthplace and childhood home of Sir Winston Churchill), until we researched it and found out that in fact there were indeed some other shared traits. Alright, so some of our little facts were a little bit far reaching, but hey, we made it all rhyme and had some laughs so it’s all is good – right?

About a month had gone by when I was contacted by Hal, the Grand Poobah of Bebo music and told that I had won! I was so excited to be on my way to Hollywood and to meet Jamie Cullum, my musical hero. As we prepared for the trip from Connecticut to LA, the nerves set in. It is kind of a scary thought to know that you are going to meet someone that you really admire. I was worried about what I would possibly say to someone that is larger than life to me. I was also concerned – what if he turned out to be a total jerk – would I be so let down that I wouldn’t like his music anymore (although I knew the chances of this were slim)? As the date drew closer, I was in regular contact with Hal from Bebo. I could tell right away that I was going to like Hal, who was going to be our host for the evening of the show.

The night of the event finally arrived. We met Hal and his brother Sam and some friends at a bar beforehand. We had a great time and to be honest would have been just satisfied to hang out with our new friends all night. We tore ourselves away from the drinks and ventured on to The Hollywood Bowl. I can’t imagine a better place to see an outdoor concert on a beautiful summer evening. The LA Philharmonic was great – the theme of the night was Cool Britannia and they played tunes from James Bond, Austin Powers and other assorted things. The conductor was a funny and charismatic Englishman, but I really could not wait to see Jamie take the stage, as we had seen him live several times before and think that as live performances go, he is hard to top. So let’s review the scene – we’re at the Hollywood Bowl on a gorgeous summer evening, we’ve enjoyed several cocktails, we’re hanging out with some great new friends and we know we are about to see our favorite musician/performer take the stage. Does it get any better than that? When Jamie took the stage it was just the icing on the cake. He was in great voice and his piano playing sounded better than ever.
When I am at a concert at a larger venue I never know where to look. Is it better to look at the figure of the performer on stage or at the close-up pictures on the massive screens? My eyes were shifting all around trying to decide where to focus. I wanted to suck in every detail but I’m afraid that in the process of all of the eye shifting I didn’t notice much more than the great music. Jamie’s set list was as follows:

I Get a Kick Out of You
All at Sea
Blame it On My Youth
Catch the Sun
London Skies
A bit of a new song*/I’ve Got you Under My Skin
Twentysomething
All at Sea
Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard

He played a part of a new song that contained lyrics to the effect of “I pl

Hollywood Bowl Competition!
Hello and welcome to my Bebo page! I'm playing just two nights at the Hollywood Bowl in California this July with the LA Symphonic Orchestra. It's going to be a very special and unique evening. I'm only playing a few select shows this year so I'd like you to be at this one with me! I've put a competition together with the good people at Bebo which gives one lucky Beboer the chance to win a pair of tickets for the concert and to meet me back stage after the show - if you'd like to of course! The competition is open to anyone with a bebo profile, who's linked with me at bebo bands, but be careful, if you win you'll have to get yourself there! And if you're under 18, you'll need to share the prize with your parent or guardian. And if you win, I'll be asking you to blog your experiences on your bebo profile.

All you've got to do is sign up as a friend of mine on Bebo bands, then visit my personal page and send me a message to tell me what Sir Winston Churchill and I have in common. You can give me the cold hard facts, or make it funny. I'll be reading them all and personally choosing the winner, so please be interesting! See you in Hollywood!
