Formed in 2003, Jaded Sun went through the paces as most other bands do, gigging and saving to enable them to record their critically acclaimed debut EP “Raw” in 2004. The EP titled track “Raw” launched their rock profile to a national stage becoming the most downloaded track on Ireland's premier download charts. The track broke all down load records in Ireland, staying at the top of the charts for almost 30 weeks.
In May 2005, the band straight into the studio with Ireland's top rock producers Chris O’Brien and Graham Murphy, Chris being known for his work with Aslan, Hot House Flowers, Adam Clayton and The Boom Town Rats.
“John (lead singer) is arguably one of the best lead vocalists have ever worked with or ever seen.” Chris O'Brien
With the “Falling On The Fears” EP being tipped for number 1 by Larry Gogan on release in late 05, the band were making a name for themselves on the international scene, being asked to write the theme song for a movie remake of Apocolypse Snow, a cult snowboarding movie in the 80’s, with Hollywood backing.
The band started 2006 running with a plethora of gigs topping the year with their amazing performance supporting Bon Jovi in Croke Park, showing them as Irelands hottest new rock band for years. (Jaded Sun are only the third Irish band ever to play in Ireland’s largest music arena.)
Jaded Sun spent most of last year writing and finalising songs for their debut Album. With all concentration on the record, the band played only a few gigs in 07’ including an outdoor headline gig in Zagreb Main Square, Croatia and the Hennessy Artistry, Ireland.
Since returning from America, Jaded Sun are currently preparing to start gigging and promoting their new album.

Jaded Sun - Gypsy Trip
I’ve been sitting here wondering why no-one had emerged over the last couple of years to challenge The Answer for their title as contenders for the undisputed Blues rock championship of the world. Some people have been trying to big up Glyder but they’re not the real thing. So when a CD popped through the door with a rather uninspired cover and a dodgy title, I took the press bumph with a pinch of salt. "A thunderous, powerful, guitar driven bluesy hard rock album which bounds from the speakers". Pah, thinks I, I’ll be the judge of that.
But blow me down with a Quireboys B-side, if this isn’t all that and more. It is without a doubt the finest slab of Blues rock I have heard since (yes I know it’s a cliche) The Answer first exploded into my world. Having spent the last four years playing pubs and clubs the length of Ireland, releasing a self funded single (’Raw’) and an EP (’Falling On The Fears’), Jaded Sun have evolved into an exciting, dynamic, rich and melodic Blues rock beast. Even if vocalist John Maher does sound like the long lost vocal twin of the late Quiet Riot singer, Kevin DuBrow.
However, with his raspy roar of a voice topping off the twin guitars of Sean Gosker and Eorann Stafford, and an array of foot stomping, melodic, singalong songs, this album has rarely escaped the clutches of my CD player. It really is that good. Naturally, there is a little bit of what you fancy popping through here and there, so you can play spot the Free, Thunder, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Humble Pie, Faces, Quireboys, delete as applicable reference, but there is something very much of their own making holding it all together.
They seem to have a fine collection of US southern Blues rock albums tucked away in their collections as the likes of ’Crazyman’ and ’Hey You!" are drenched in that particular vibe, helped along by the dextrous Mr Stafford who can turn his hand to dobro, lap steel, pedal steel and harmonica when he’s not riffing away. With a nice mix of tempos and an album that doesn’t overstay its welcome, Jaded Sun have laid down a marker for 2008. They give better rock than they do ballad, and the only time your attention wanders is when they go all mellow, but it’s a minor quibble on a fantastic album.
Ireland has always been a hot bed of Classic Rock since its incarnation in the 70’s with numerous bands breaking into the big time with a self styled rock that has always been popular. More recently the likes of Glyder and The Answer have been stepping out of the darkness of the underground scene and making the step up to stardom. Hot on their heels are Jaded Sun.
’Gypsy Trip’ is the debut release from a band who have only been around since 2003, but have already impressed the A & R guys at SiAn Records. So much in fact that they sent the band to LA to record the album under the guidance of Richie Mouser and Jimmy Coup, who between them have worked with Dream Theater, Andrew WK and Weezer.
This album is pure gold. Classic Blues filled Hard Rock that gets underway with ’Breaking Through’, a great opener filled with punchy guitar riffs from Sean Gosker and Eorann Stafford. The slide guitar bridge is just superb. That hard rocking back beat is provided by Damien Kelly on bass and Gavan Murray on drums, although the star of the show for me are the classic vocals of John Maher, who really knows how to bring the bands sound alive.
The good times just keep on comin’ with the excellent ’Crazyman’, which gets underway with Stafford on Harmonica before Maher lets loose with those tremendous vocals. Again the slide guitar and harmonica mix are just a sublime touch to this bluesy rocker.
The next two songs are definitely old school rockers. ’Fever’ has that definite Led Zep feel to it,

Another new rock band to emerge out of Ireland and another to take their influences from the great rock acts of the 1970s. For the basis of Jaded Sun’s sound think of a bit of Rolling Stones, a touch of Faces, a little of Irish blues-rock guitar God Rory Gallagher and most surprisingly a nice twist by way of similarities also to American Southern Rock greats Lynyrd Skynyrd. Like fellow Irish rockers The Answer and Glyder though, they have enough nous to use the influences well rather than simply create poor facsimiles and if “Gypsy Trip” doesn’t end up as one of the top début albums in the grand 2008 summing up then there are definitely some really outstanding new albums to come later this year.
Opening matters with the stomping statement of intent “Breaking Through” there is an immediate similarity to be drawn to the British rock hope of the late 80s and early 90s Thunder, a band who share some of the same influences. It’s effective, impressive blues based classic rock and singer John Mayer does occasionally possess a set of pipes that could be mistaken for Danny Bowes. The album has impressive early impact past the opening song too as the band move through the blues-rock swagger of “Crazyman“, the mid tempo strut of “Fever” and the AC/DC styled groove of “Hey You!“, all consistently solid classic rock.
Mid album the band really bloom, as firstly the superb slow number “Crave” begs comparison to early Rod Stewart and The Faces, and so does the excellent “Can’t Stop” come to that but this time it down to the feel good, party time rock ‘n’ roll sound resplendent with pounding piano and steel guitar drone. Another slower number follows close after but rather than the “made for MTV” feel that many rock ballads still seem to aim for this borrows from a template more akin to Led Zeppelin’s “Since I’ve Been Loving You” or Thunder’s “Don’t Wait For Me” for the album highlight of “Sweetness“.
The latter part of the disc sees some cracking blues-rock take the fore once again with a trio of fine hard rockers that include mature and effective storytelling in “He Knows Home“. This band understand the importance of leaving a positive impression as well and choose another great composition “She’s Got Class” to end with. A thumping rhythm once again and overall a song that will surely be a highlight of a live show, it’s got one of those great little guitar riffs as a repeating motif, the type that you just can’t help singing whilst flailing away on the air guitar… and its even got a reprise too and there just aren’t enough of those in today’s rock music releases!
It appears the band have been building up to this for a while. Six years or so since forming, a couple of below the radar EP releases and some high profile support slots in their homeland, including Bon Jovi at Croke Park, they are on the evidence of this album a surprising omission from the recent “Classic Rock Ones To Watch in 2008″ issue - I’m sure once people hear material from this disc that will be corrected. A fine way to make an entrance!
