What Julia says about…Adoption
When I was younger my family had a lot of kids around us who were adopted or fostered. It always intrigued me a little bit. When I was about twelve years old I was in the show ‘Annie’. I loved that show – it was so sad and sweet and funny and had heaps of great music and dancing. And it was always interesting that it was based around a young orphan, who dreams of being adopted… so it made me think about adoption quite a bit. Imagine what it would be like etc.
One of the girls I knew only found out she was adopted when she was a tween. It totally threw her and she struggled with feeling accepted.
I would totally adopt if I couldn’t have kids, or maybe if the opportunity came up to help a family member out or something.
This week on In BeTWEEN we are doing a whole episode about Adoption… so I will be finding out a whole lot more about it!
But in the meantime maybe some of you guys can fill me in. Are you adopted? What is it like? Ups? Downs? Have you always known you were adopted or did you find out later on? Do you think it is any different to living with your birth parents? Even if you are not adopted, what do you think it would be like?

What Julia says about… politics
Hey guys,
We'll be talking about politics on In beTWEEN this week and guess what - I recently spent the weekend at Parliament!
I was a part of the ‘Aspiring Leaders Forum’. It was pretty cool – we were welcomed to Parliament by Bill English and Phil Goff, and got to hang out with an MP for the afternoon. We had dinners in the ‘Banquet Hall’ and got to view ‘question time’.
Question time is when MPs get to ask the ministers questions - it was hilarious! All these grown men and women bickering with one another like they are about four! One young MP had a cold so his voice sounded a bit croaky and an older MP yelled out, “It’s alright mate, we all go through puberty!” And everyone cracked up. How embarrassing!!!
But listening to some of the MPs speak to us directly, without all of the others around, made me realize they are all just normal people who are trying to make a difference. And even though I may not agree with everything they do… at least they are doing SOMETHING.

What Julia says about…Food
Okay so this week on In beTWEEN we’re talking about one of my favourite topics - FOOD!
It took me ages to realize that I love to cook. When I was at school I used to tell people that I hated it and that I was really bad at it. I don’t even know why I said that – I had never even given it a decent go! But at some point along the way I realised that if you start with sticking to a recipe you can’t go wrong… if you don’t know what sauté, or blanch, or cube means, just google it!
One of my favourite things about cooking is making the food look good. It’s like an art, and I’m sure if it looks good it tastes better!
Another little obsession of mine is making my meals as healthy as possible while still making sure they taste great. Sometimes it seems like it’s all the stuff that’s bad for us that tastes the best don’t you think? But you can actually make some really tasty meals that are nutritious and leave you feeling great.
When I was a tween, we had a class at school called ‘Home Economics’… I think they call it Food Tech now. Anyway, every week in class we would cook something. It would be anything from Macaroni Cheese to Scotch Eggs to a jar of jam! Every week I would want to take my creation home to show my Mum what I had made but every week the temptation got the better of me and I would eat it long before it even made it close to my front door.
See – I’ve always loved food.
