  • HYP Gets Govt Support and Funding

Hurunui Youth Coordinator by Hurunui Youth Coordinator
    Monday,15 Jun 2009

Hurunui Youth Programme gets Goverment support and funding boost.

The Hurunui District Council has been granted government funding to continue its very successful, innovative project that has proven to be of benefit local young people.

Youth Affairs Minister Paula Bennett today announced the successful recipients of the Ministry of Youth Development’s Youth Development Partnership Fund.

“I’m delighted to congratulate the Hurunui District Council whose innovative project, Hurunui Youth Programme (HYP) is among those to be granted funding. The great thing about projects like Hurunui's is that they get young people actively engaged and helping their peers. Having young people involved in the development and implementation of these projects is vital,” Ms Bennett says.

Fund recipients include councils from across the country, covering rural, metropolitan and provincial communities, with funding totalling more that $700,000. The Hurunui Youth programme will receive funding of $87,200.

“The desirability and value of the HYP programme has always had my full, enthusiastic support and commitment” said Hurunui District Council Mayor Garry Jackson. “As a Council we recognise the need to be innovative and inclusive in our approach to truly engage with young people, to foster leadership and keep them involved and enthusiastic.

“The Hurunui business community have been very generous in their sponsorship and support of the programme over the past year and we are heartened that central government has also recognised the value this programme brings to our rural community. This funding is confirmation of their support and acknowledges the worth of investing in the needs of our young people. It will enable the HYP programme to continue its success of the past year and to carry on providing a range of events and activities for young people over the next two years".

“Projects designed by adults for young people risk not hitting the mark. Why not go straight to the source like Hurunui did? I believe this is what helped to strengthen Hurunui's young people’s participation and engagement with their community,” says Ms Bennett.

The Youth Development Partnership Fund provides an opportunity for the Ministry of Youth Development, territorial authorities and young people to work together to provide new and innovative local youth development projects.
