Me, Myself, and I
Howling Bells are an Indie rock band formed in Sydney, Australia late 2004. Shortly after forming the band left for England. The band released their debut self-titled album in 2006 on Bella Union and produced by Ken Nelson.

It received much critical acclaim including a 9/10 in NME and 7.8/10 from Pitchfork. They spent much of the next 2 years touring Europe, Australia and parts of the US.

Howling Bells played at the 2007 NME Awards show. They also performed at numerous festivals over the 2006 English summer including Reading/Leeds. They have supported US band The Killers and Placebo around Europe, as well as Snow Patrol on their Australian tour.

Album 2, 'Radio Wars', is out now via Independiente Records and the third album "The Loudest Engine" is due to be released on 12 September 2011 via Cooking Vinyl.

  • The Loudest Engine

The Loudest Engine will be released in September 2011. Howling Bells' members Glenn Moule, Brendan Picchio, Joel Stein, and his sister Juanita Stein started writing for the album while they were on the road supporting Coldplay in May and June 2009 on the third leg of the North American Viva la Vida Tour. The band chose to allow Killers' bassist Mark Stoermer to produce the album, which was his first experience as a record producer. They connected with him while they appeared as the opening support act for his band on three separate occasions in 2006 and 2007. In September 2010, the band started recording at Battle Born Studios in Las Vegas. Stoermer and members of Howling Bells share a similar taste in books, film, and music. While recording, Stoermer would bring his collection of Hitchcock and cult films into the studio late at night and entertain the band with the old movies. According to Juanita (vocals, rhythm guitar), the album is a modern psychedelic record, and one that is more folk and rock than their previous two releases. For the band, The Loudest Engine feels like a continuation of their first record, Howling Bells. The band made the decision to not record anything that they couldn't perform live, referring to their last album Radio Wars, which was very electronically oriented.

  • THIRD ALBUM

On the radio (Music For Listeners) Juanita said, "There was a quote from, I think it may have been Kings of Leon, who were saying that the third record really defines the band because your first is obviously your introduction and you’ve been working your whole life up to that point and then the second is always a reaction to the first one, which I think is what Radio Wars was to our first record. The third record] is the band being a little bit more comfortable about where we’re at and who we are and I think it really will define the band."

They expected the process of making the third album to be a lot easier than the events that occurred between Howling Bells and Radio Wars, when the band changed record labels. "There was a lot of red tape," said Juanita Stein, while Brendan Picchio added, "There’s no bureaucracy this time, it’s just going to be straightforward making the record."

However, later in 2010 Stein admitted that recording had been delayed by the very "red tape" they had hoped to avoid. In August she wrote on the band's Myspace page; "We have been busy writing, recording demos, changing labels, sifting through red tape, being frustrated and equally enlightened at various results and changes in the band's life! But the good news is we finally have a date to start recording our third album. September 15th we're off to record in the desert, where the Mojave meets the lights. We have a bunch of songs to work from and a damn good idea of which direction we wanna to head in." The recording location, "where the Mojave meets the lights", was Las Vegas.
