WHAT IS ‘HOME STREET HOME’?

We provide information to all year 10 and 11 students about the reality of homelessness and the value of mediation in relation to preventing homelessness.

Many people leave home every year because they don’t feel they can stay any longer. One of the main reasons given for moving out is ‘family breakdown’ and one of the most common problems is people not being able to talk and listen to each other.

Mediation offers a way for the family to start talking again. It doesn’t have to include the whole family, but it could involve a brother or sister, mum or dad, aunt, step-parents, grandparents, partners or in fact anyone who is concerned about the situation. The mediators are not there to take sides or tell you what to do. They will listen to what has been happening and, with you, try to find a way forward.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IF I CAN’T STAY AT HOME
Living away from home is not easy at 16, so, however difficult things may seem, it is worth trying to work things out. If you can’t, and you really have to leave home, it’s important to get help as it can be very complicated.

If you are made homeless or under the threat of homelessness you can meet with a Foundation Housing worker who will assess your needs. Once we have all the information you will be referred on to the relevant agency. There are three main agencies we would send you to - Housing Options Mediation Worker who is based at The Town Hall, Time Out Housing Options Worker and Social Services who can then refer if necessary to Scarborough Borough Council.
WHAT OTHER SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO ME?
Home Street Home workers can also refer to drug and alcohol counselling services, mental health services, learning providers such as E2E, Gamblers anonymous, Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual support groups should you feel that you require specialist support.
WILL I BE IN CONTROL OF WHAT HAPPENS TO ME?
We want you to choose how you live your life and give you as many choices as possible. We encourage and teach a culture of self help, self reliance, independence and confidence in all of our customers.

All the information you give us with is treated within Foundation Scarborough’s confidentiality policy and we will ask your permission to share any information with other agencies where possible. If the you, or others involved, appear to be at risk then confidentiality will be breached to ensure your and their safety.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE SERVICE?
The service provides an environment for the young person and their family to work through any issues that may result in the threat of homelessness. Mediation will be offered initially whilst further support can be accessed.
