Uncovering what makes students happy
This page has been set up to help unravel arguably one of the world’s most controversial, often debated, and usually incorrectly concluded of all questions ever asked: What makes university students happy?
And since we, The University of Waikato, don’t believe in guessing about things so much, The Great Social Experiment will let us get the answers to this burning question straight from the source. Seven University of Waikato students have volunteered to take part in the Experiment. In charge of the Experiment is The Professor, our visiting scholar, specialising in the Sciences of Well Being. He’ll ask our students questions and set weekly video challenges to gather data on their views on happiness. And for your own dose of happy, you can watch it all unfold here and even take part yourself. - I'm studying

Chris’s take on winning $3000 in travel vouchers…
News flash! Our uber-talented Chris has made contact from over the water in true video-style! He wanted to express his excitement over winning and tell you a little about how he plans to spend his prize of $3000 in Air New Zealand travel vouchers. Check it out in the Happiness Challenge videos, just over to the left.
We’ve also added a few vox-pop videos of ‘Yours Truly’ doing a bit of investigative reporting on campus, delving into and uncovering the mystery of what makes University of Waikato students so amazingly happy. You’ll find them in our Video Box section. Enjoy!

Nothing’s better than our ‘Best of Waikato University’ video…
Good day, friends. And what a marvelous one it has become already. Mainly due to the bout of self-inflicted déjà vu I’ve just experienced from watching the ‘Best of Waikato University’ video we’ve put together.
It’s a lovely collection of footage from the Challenge videos our dear Guinea Pigs submitted over the past few months. And guess what? It’s now ready for you to watch so you can re-live all of those magical University of Waikato moments near and dear to all our hearts. I’m still so proud at what a fine job our Guinea Pigs have done in representing The University.
Anyway, grab yourself a cool summer drink, turn up the volume and live the life and times of our Guinea Pigs once again.
Then, may I recommend you get your application to enrol in to the fine people at The University of Waikato – there’s no time like the present and no better way to experience for yourselves the joys of Waikato as shown to us by this video!

Chris trumps all other Guinea Pigs to become our Supreme Challenge winner
Words simply cannot describe how I felt at 9pm, Sunday night. Although, ‘thrilled’ is one that comes to mind as Cameron leaped ahead as our final, Challenge Seven winner. Bravo, dear boy!
Then, just after my excitement subsided, a feeling of awe washed over me as I thought about what an amazing job Chris has done over this stage of the Experiment, winning 5 of the 7 video Challenges. Clever boy. Which also means that (drum roll please)… CHRIS IS OUR OVERALL, GRAND, SUPREME WINNER!
CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS!!
Thanks also to Chris for both entertaining and educating us on the happiest aspects of the University of Waikato.
May I also just say how very very proud I am of all of my Guinea Pigs! Moko, Hayley, Maria, Chelsea, Cameron, Rochelle and Chris, your contribution to the Great Social Experiment has changed the face of the study of Well Being forever.
Many thanks to each of you, and please look me up for a nice, hot cup of tea if you ever make it Hogsthorpe way. (Especially you Chris, since you now have $3,000 in Air New Zealand travel vouchers.)
