Hadlow College working within the Community – 22.01.09
Hadlow College Countryside Management Students have taken their new found skills into the community and built a walkway to restore what was an impassable right of way in Southborough.
Dylan Smith, a first year foundation degree student on the course and local resident, was looking for an alternative route to access the Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre when walking with his three year old daughter. He came across the walkway but discovered that it was impassable due to the muddy conditions. Inspired by his degree course, Dylan raised the idea of transforming the path with the College.
Dylan contacted the Public Rights of Way Area Officer for Tunbridge Wells, Jonathan Bibby, at Kent County Council, and they agreed that work was needed to rectify the problem. The students designed and built a wooden walkway across the mud and are erecting new gates at either ends of the field making the right of way a usable path for local residents.
Countryside Lecturer, Matt Pitts, said “this project is really exciting, not only does it enable us to put into practice some of the theory taught in the classroom but we are also putting something back into the local community. It’s really good for the students to be able to see a project through from start to finish and hopefully benefit from their work”.
Jonathan Bibby said ‘I’m really pleased with what the students have done and hope to be able to work with the College in the future on other similar projects’.
