Neda Agha Soltan Didn't Have A Gun
Neda Agha Soltan didn't have a gun.
She wasnt brandishing a deadly weapon.
She wasnt threatening anyone's life
Just their authority.
Neda Agha Soltan was demanding a more open democracy
Something we have struggled for in this country
She didn't want to have her vote taken away
She didn't want an autocrat to have the final say.
She was hoping Iran would be free some day
The people who saw the shooter chased him down!
Pulled him off his motorbike to face her body on the ground.
He was a member of the Basij
A voluntary military that was once revolutionary.
Now they're loyal to Khameini.
Who rules autocratically.
The Basij defended Iran from Iraq when Saddam launched a vicious attack.
Now they're attacking people in the street
In their own country
Because they non-violently and defiantly
Resist Khameini's authority to pick the presidency unilaterally
The shooter said he didn't mean to kill her!
He showed signs of regret.
"It was just a warning shot," He said.
His warning shot left an unarmed woman dead.

MAD LIB SONGWRITING
For this workshop I will bring songs and ask the audience to give me verbs, proper names, weather phenomenon, etc. Then I will sing a song with those word replacements. I will perform this workshop with popular and original songs. I will also take requests from the audience to make Mad-Libs with.
Sunday, May 24, 2009 Acoustic Stage 11:00-11:30 AM
I have been rehearsing with Thomas Hubbard, Rick Aydelotte, Paulette DeRooy and members of the Alki Flats.
We are going to perform "This Land is Your Land," "Dance All Night Long," "I'm a Righteous Dumpster Diver Dude," "My Cadillac Don't Run No More," and if time "Paulette is Beautiful."
Here's the poster:

Me Singing the Dixie Chicks' "I'm Not Ready to Make Nice" at the Green Bean Coffee House. I liked the Dixie Chicks before they outed themselves as liberals. They are great musicians and they always hae a great band. But now that they are standing up for their principles, I only like them more.

"Lyin Eyes" by the Eagles.
I love this song because it has a nice melody and like many Eagles songs, a unique chord progression.
"Kill Me Down The Road"
I have heard Jim Hinde sing this song a hundred times at the Pike Place Market. It was easy for me to memorize it and keep it alive.

"Heather is Beautiful"
This is my chick song. Women have gotten out of their cars to tip this song. While singing the "Donna is Beautiful' version Donna came up on stage and kissed me. I didn't even know she was in the audience.
I was playing my mandolin at the bus stop and a woman smiled at me. I said hi and she walked on by, then she came back. We talked for a minute and she told me her name, Lizzie. I sang her "Lizzie is Beautiful."
When she left she hugged me. I sing it for Paulette too.

Ronald Reagan was no respecter of freedom
I recently received a comment with a quote from Ronald Reagan about freedom. I feel the need to balance it.
Reagan supported Sadaam Hussein, he said he was our friend. Reagan brought militant Islamic fighters to the US and trained them in counterinsurgency. That movement was led by Osama Bin Laden. They brought those methods to Al Qaeda and used them against us.
Reagan supported the Contras who attacked schools and health clinics in Nicaragua.
He sold weapons to Iran when they were sworn enemies of the United States. And he didn't even have the guts to take responsibility for it. He let Oliver North take the fall.
Ronald Reagan was the worst president of the 20th century not just because of bad policies, but because of his cynical leadership.
And he is falsely credited with ending Communism. The credit for that goes to Gorbachev. How many people would give up dictatorial power willingly. Reagan wouldn't, he would use it to bust unions like he did with the air traffic controllers.
He committed treason and called it patriotism. He committed terrorism and called it freedom fighting. He played Orweiian DoubleSpeak like no other president in my lifetime. He was an actor and a politician, not a hero.
