Irish Climate Camp

'Interest' meeting - Sat 11th Oct at 2pm - the 'new' Seomra Spraoi - 10 Belvedere Court, Dublin 1 (near Mountjoy Square Park)

Hi Folks if you want more information about a possible climate camp in Ireland next please get in touch! e-mail gluaiseacht@gmail.com or come to the meeting this saturday.

‘Climate Camp’ as it stands now is essentially an organisation of critical mass, having evolved into a powerful movement from what was initially started in August 2006, when 600 people gathered at the UK’s biggest single source of carbon dioxide, Drax coal-fired power station in West Yorkshire for ten days of learning and sustainable living, which culminated in a day of mass action against the power station. The aim was to kick-start a social movement to tackle climate change.
The Other Half Of Me
Fergal Scully
Shell To Sea
Direct ongoing involvement in the “The Shell to Sea Campaign & Rossport Solidarity Camp” – supporting the community of Rossport and Erris, Co Mayo in their fight against the Shell, Statoil & Marathon consortium who aim to exploit our natural resources, with no benefit for the people of Ireland, at great risk to human lives of local people and the environment.
Green Guides
Finalizing “City & Town Green Guides” for Ennis, Waterford, Drogheda, Portlaoise & Naas. The purpose of the guides is to provide a reference for citizens of, and visitors to these towns on environmental issues, nature resources, community services, and green businesses in the area. The guides include a 'Green Map' of the Towns which includes the locations of recycle points, art galleries, second-hand shops, bicycle shops, organic suppliers, museums, and more.
Policy
Submission to consultation on Government Dept. of Communications, Marine and Natural resources, Green Paper on Energy. Gluaiseacht made a comprehensive fifteen-page submission in October 2006 addressing most of the questions asked in the Green Paper and highlighting omissions and positive aspects of the Green paper.
Anti War
Important Anti-War Activity has taken place over the past year, with members taking part at The 24 hour Peace Camp at Shannon Airport January 6th 07, Little Women’s Day (Nollaig na mBan), to commemorate the anniversary of the peace camp and a wreath laying ceremony on the anniversary of the war in Iraq. Gluaiseacht members hosted several international Anti-War activists in the Midwest region. This includes former UN Assistant Sectary General Hans Von Sponeck, Cindy Sheehan from the “Bring the Troops Home” campaign in the US and, Ruhal Ahmed, one of the ‘Tipton Three’ who spent over two years in Guantanamo Bay prison. Gluaiseacht has also been involved in marketing the “Black Shamrock” as an iconic symbol for the anti-war movement in Ireland.

Bitchin Kitchin
Promoting Vegetarianism and Veganism as a method of highlighting the overall environmental impact of meat production in the Western World is an area of interest to Gluaiseacht as is the promotion of the general impact in energy terms of mainstream food consumption patterns in the developed world. As such Gluaiseacht will continue too support the Bitchin Kitchin in its development as a sub project of the organisation.
Legal Support:
Gluaiseacht hosts and will continue to host on its website knowledge pertaining to the Irish legal system for those involved in Non Violent Direct Actions in Ireland.

  • Non Hierarchical organisation or paticiapatory democracy

This was an answer to a question received some time ago and in hindsight not bad at all.

We believe that in order to have a sustainable society decisions must be made at as local a level as possible. Because of this and for various other reasons we have decided to operate our group as democratically as possible. This means not that we get to vote for leaders but that we get to decide on all decisions the group makes. We also all have a right to make proposals which the group decides on. Decisions are made by consensus rather than majority vote.

If you come to our skillshare weekend you'll see how this goes in practice. The venue (Seomra Spraoi) is also run by a collective of people on a non hierarchical basis and has been around for 3 years now. Recently having moved to a much bigger place due to the success of the last place.

Above all non-hierarchical organisation makes things more accessible to everyone. We can get the maximum from our members as they don't have to wait to join a committee in order to contribute.

What this also means is that we all share responsibility for the organisation. So its up to everyone of us to make it work. It can fall down on this point sometimes aswell as you need to have self motivated people to get things done.

See http://eyfa.org/ecotopia for more information about this form of organisation. Ecotopia is where I got involved with Gluaiseacht and is a good example of successful non hierarchical organisation.

Sorry for bangin on but its something I really care about and its not easy to explain.

feel free to ask me anymore questions

  • THE WORD TO SHELL

They have visited us in Mayo; we will go to visit them.

    They have visited upon us violence and pollution;
    they have corrupted our politicians and police;
they have come thus armed to rob the resources upon which our children
    depend.

We will go and visit them to see what is the matter,
where the trouble lies, and what, in the heart of darkness at the core of
the empty Shell,so enslaves the misfortunate executives that they should so behave.

Are they hungry? We will bring them food.
Are they thirsty? We will bring them clear water to drink (from Carrowmore), before in their dehydrated rage they poison it.

Shell is a feeble spirit, an empty headed tyranny, mindlessly and
    murderously wrecking resources worldwide.
Its coming to Ireland is really a cry for help; its corruption of
politicians and police a call for aid.
Like an eviscerated shark, though gutless, it still grabs and mauls its
    prey.
It asks to be liberated; on this shore shall it break, and valuable prey
and monstrous predator shall be separated.

We hear the cry, we respond to the call and come to free the faceless and
    faint hearted funders, the executives,
and the violated victims who are their agents from the misery of their
    present state.

Worldwide the people are awakening. At a time of looming shortages of
    resources and atmospheric absorptive capacity,
we do not wish to see the controls in matters of life and death fallen into
the hands of psychotic non-person persons,
those mindless vagabonds the multinational corporations, who have already
been allowed to control too much of our resources, money, media and thought.

But the Spirit is always powerful and free, and has chosen Bolivia and Venezuela to show the way:
some may need multinational partners to help manage their resources; no
    one needs owners.

AGREEMENTS MADE AND DEALS STRUCK BY GOVERNMENT MINISTERS WHO ARE EITHER NON COMPOS OR CORRUPT ARE NOT BINDING ON THEIR PEOPLES.

This is our message to Shell: For the future you can keep your money and save your reputation; your bribery and blackmail invalidate the deals you think you have struck. Poor slaves entrapped in the empty Shell, this is what you must do: Make voluntary restitution of the goods you have stolen. This much you owe to your victims, your shareholders and yourselves.

The truth of the lisbon treaty.
The Treaty gives too much power to the EU
Ireland's ability to make decisions for itself is severely limited
The Treaty does nothing to make the EU more democratic
It sounds the death-knell for Irish neutrality
It will weaken the welfare state, public services and workers' rights.
