Caley Environment Society <GCESS>
"callyenv.soc@gmail.com"

Join up: Take two shiny ponds to the GCUSA, fill out a form and join up! Xmas shindig to follow, free booze and entry

Best new society 2006/07!!

cheers for everyones support and hard work

The Caledonian Environmental Society was formed due to the lack of activity and percived lack of importance that the university as a whole places upon the issues of sustainability and our environmental impact.

We have meeting in the pub which last untill 4am when we get kicked out a club. But we're good when sober.

next year we'll be tryin to get money saved by reducing the print outs we need for courseworks, saving electricity etc are redeployed into sports and other events for students. The energy bill for the uni is going to be £1.5 million, everyone can make a difference, get the money better spent and do your bit!

Reduce - the amount of energy you use, printouts, PC monitors off
Reuse - double sided printing where possible
recycle - more dedicated and clearer recycling

New Uni Mandate
Basically we playfully nudged the uni into signing up to this...aren't we clever? We believe that it is possible for this institution to improve its environmental performance through increased investment and utilisation of the experience and expertise of staff within the environment centre. We support for the following aims:
1.
1. That new buildings and refurbishment work in existing buildings exceeds the weak environmental standards currently subscribed to. New buildings should be designed to reduce energy costs with sustainable construction a key component in all work.
2
2. That the university should ensure that 30% of all energy needs within the campus be sourced from renewable energy supplies at the time of the signing of the next tender contract. This exceeds the current level of 10% from renewable sources.
3
3. The university should consider creating a full time professional environmental officer to ensure the highest possible performance in all areas (recycling, energy efficiency, building standards etc), at all times is achieved. Over a 10 day period, one third of all electrical appliances were switched on at night when not in use. In just 10 days, this cost £6000. In 365 days that figure is nearly £220, 000. Any additional costs incurred through the investments above can be paid for simply by switching off appliances when not in use leaving additional money to fund further environmental initiatives. In addition, we believe it is vital that any efforts by the students are recognised, and that a suitable percentage of money from energy saving are re-directed into the Glasgow Caledonian Students Association Welfare Department.

Fairtrade fashion for students
Fairtrade fashion for students

Fairtrade clothes are affordable and they just got fashionable – best of all not a sweatshop in sight

A model goes down the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week in a fairtrade hooded minidress by Epona
Tessa Roberts

As the spotlights focus in, the model pauses, wiggles her hips, and smiles to the horde of eager paparazzi. She twirls, showing off a watermelon pink mini dress to the audience of fashionistas and shopaholics.

This was the Prêt-a-Porter show in Paris, but the dress wasn’t Stella McCartney, Gucci or even Versace. It was one of the latest must-haves from Epona, a Fairtrade clothing company that strives to combine affordable fashion for students with ethical wages for farmers. And with a relatively small price tag of £39, it was one of the most student-friendly items to appear at Paris Fashion Week this Autumn.

Gone are the days where Fairtrade clothing signified a plain t-shirts or drab, oversized kaftans. This year, catwalks have seen an explosion of style and colour, with Epona’s Diva Blue denim shorts, Tropical Green ‘Racer Back’ dresses, Limelight Yellow t-shirts and cropped trousers.

And it’s not just fashion-followers who are benefiting. The clothes are made from Fairtrade-certified cotton, giving producers a decent wage for their hard work without a sweatshop in sight. From start to finish, the farmers, machinists, printers and packers are ensured a fair deal.

You don’t have too look far for ethical fashion this season, as high street shops stock all the items needed for a funky Fairtrade wardrobe. Topshop, Topman and Accessorize are selling Fairtrade Jewellery, whilst New Look, Primark and Next offer t-shirts and tunic tops made from Fairtrade cotton.

Casper ter Kuile, 21, who studies Sociology at Warwick University, started campaigning for Fairtrade whilst on work experience with Oxfam, aged 17.

Since then, he has become involved with Warwick branch of the People and Planet Society, a campaign group for students which defends human rights.

He was the National Trade Justice Officer for People and Planet last year, and Fairtrade clothing is one of his top concerns.

“Now you can buy items in Topshop or M&S, Fairtrade clothing is much more accessible,” he said. “It’s nigh-on impossible to get everything Fairtrade, but it’s not about being perfect, it’s about doing the best you can.”

Ter Kuile uses online shop Howies to buy ethically-produced running gear, as well as M&S for basic Fairtrade items such as socks, underwear and shirts.

“From my experience when you speak to people about Fairtrade, people generally love it,” he said. “People are often surprised to see how much there is out there.”

But amidst the novelty of Fairtrade items, many high street chains are still neglecting the majority of farmers and producers, paying them as little as 70p per hour - not even enough for a daily meal.

Labour Behind the Label, a coalition run by ten different Fairtrade organisations and lobby groups, provides inside information about what is happening behind the shop fronts of high street stores.

It points the finger at many student-friendly shops, including Matalan, River Island and Mk One, claiming they do too little or nothing at all to give farmers a fair deal.

Martin Hearson, Campaigns Co-ordinator at Labour Behind the Label said: “Our key issue with Matalan is that they have a code of conduct of workers’ rights, and it doesn’t include freedom of association – the right for workers to join a trade union and assert themselves.”

“Most high street shops are in denial,” he added. “There is a small bit of text on most websites, but no evidence that the stores actually implement any changes.”
