Fiction/Action <fictionaction>

‘Fiction/Action’ are 4 young men from the frozen plains of North-East Scotland united round one old belief: making music that says something. Something a bit more than ‘I got dumped again last week’ or ‘I’ve been wearing the same jeans for a few days now’.

Influenced by American post-hardcore types like Fugazi and Quicksand and noisy Brit guitar pop bands such as Seafood, (early) Idlewild and The Llama Farmers, their songs cover such disparate subjects as the forgotten revolutionary polemics of poet William Blake, obsession with Scarlett Johansson and asking ‘Can puritans party?’ to those too cool to dance. They’ve yelped their messages of peace, love and proportional representation in support of everyone from iForward Russia! to The Kooks.

Their three track EP ‘Fake Love, Real Jazz’ is available to buy from their website www.fictionaction.com and will be appearing in the T in the Park T-break heats (King Tuts, Glasgow Wed 9th May), Cafe Drummonds (Aberdeen May 11th), as well at the GoNorth festival in Inverness (7-8 June).

We have collectively supported - The Kooks, iForward Russia!, Jetplane Landing, Biffy Clyro, X Is Loaded, thisGIRL, Hell is For Heroes, Hundred Reasons, The Glitterati and probably more that we've forgotten about....

Fiction/Action - The TBreak Experience

close Blog

  • The Last Update...

As per usual, it's been an extremely long time since the last update. This blog shall be the last one though as we break the news to you all that Fiction/Action are no more due to geographical reasons.

After much chat in an attempt to find a solution we realistically concluded that there is not one. The project has been a great experience having supported the likes of The Kooks and iForward Russia! along the way aswell as playing at this years TBreak. We attempted to arrange a 'final' gig but there were no suitable dates for us to work around. We'd like to thank everyone who supported us from the start or who showed us any kind of interest. To those news friends we made on our journey we hope to stay in touch.

We still have some copies of 'Fake Love Real Jazz' left so if you would like any then please get in touch. We've billions of demo recordings aswell so we may 'leak' these into public if you ask nicely... it all depends on your niceness to us though

Love from the former members of F/A x

  • Fiction/Action featured in Playmusic's 'Pickup' Magazine!!

We were featured in playmusic's 'Pickup' Magazine which is a free fanzine type thing they print, it's available in most music shops. Here's what they had to say about us...

"Fiction/Action - As we all know, Scotland has brought us some of our best bands. F/A are next in line...

What manner of specimen are we dealing with here?
The kind of awkward, angular, screaming menaces that Idlewild started off as and that mclusky and Jetplane Landing continued. Yes, we're talking passionate, fierce and drastically the opposite of The View. Thank the lord.

    So what's the deal?
Based in Aberdeen, they're a pretty young creation - having formed last year - but they already sound ready to set fire to all our faces. Yep, that impressive. The various members had, inevitably, been playing in other bands. Wanting to get away from the "crowd-pleasing punk songs" that they used to deal in, they've now hit upon a more challenging and intense sound. Pickup certainly appreciates the move.

What have they been up to?
Pretty much taking the hard-worn route of gigging, gigging and gigging. Sticking to the local area they've still managed to pick up some valuable support slots with the likes of iForward Russia! and The Kooks. They've been asked to record a session for Channel 4 Radio and have found time to record a three track EP - Fake Love Real Jazz. It's very good.

    Where can i hear 'em?
Direct your eyes towards www.myspace.com/fictionaction where you can feast your ears upon the noise and fury of tracks like Missin Control (featured on Playmusic Issue 7's covermount CD, go get it!) and just generally check up on their progress

    In their own words:
"Taking in a range of influences inculding bands such as Fugazi, Q and not U, Mclusky, Sonic Youth, Jetplane Landing, and early Idlewild, aswell as Niall's love of other art forms such as literature, art, and politics into the creative process, gave rise to many varied songs"

    For:
People who feel like kicking lilly-livered indie bands in the face then dancing to raucous, energetic noise."

  • Review in Playmusic Magazine

Here's what May's Playmusic Magazine had to say about our cd 'Fake Love Real Jazz' (available at most retailers)

"Fiction/Action - Fake Love Real Jazz (4 Stars out of 5)

A Strong accent in music is always, always brilliant. Fiction/Action’s EP, Fake Love Real Jazz, opens with ‘Missing Control’, which you can hear on this months cover mount, and a distinct Scottish accent. Brilliant. Taking on a secret agent theme tune for the intro, it turns into a brutal cross between Biffy Clyro and Fugazi, with a smattering of early Idlewild.

With a half-spoken verse, it soon turns into screaming bloody murder during the chorus, while the guitars complain noisily underneath. Clashing melody with outright fury makes this a brilliant opening track.

‘DCKNS’ is a lot slower and a lot more considered. Building up from a simple arpeggio idea with added guitar lines, it shows off a competent vocal prowess and comes across, again, as the calmer side of Biffy. With little twisted guitar parts springing out, it’s a melodic treat.

‘Red Read Red’ starts with the kind of echoey guitar part that leads to the roads U” tread as well as being en vogue right now, for whatever reasons. It’s soon backed by a driving distorted background. With the vocals breaking up authentically during the heavy chorus, it all sounds convincingly angry and atmospheric.

It’s always a good sign and a good idea to see a diverse set of tracks on an EP. It helps identify the band’s sound and allows them to stop themselves getting hemmed in by expectations.

As an EP it’s well worth a listen and really adds Fiction/Action to my ones to watch pile. Encouraging stuff."
