Rally ended as a mark of respect to deceased spectator Jun 14, 8:48 pm

The Topaz Donegal International Rally has been abandoned after an 18 year old spectator was struck by a car at quarter to four this afternoon.

The rest of today's stages were cancelled after the incident, and tonight, the Donegal Motor Club has confirmed tomorrow's closing stages will not now go ahead.

We understand the 18 year old was crossing the road at Ballyar near Ramelton when he was struck by one of the competing cars. Witnesses have described the scene as 'horrific'. The rally was immediately stopped, and the road remains closed

The Donegal Motor Club says investigations are ongoing, but initial indications are there was no driver error involved. Witnesses who have not already spoken to gardai are being urged to do so.

It's the second time in six years the rally has been abandoned in tragic circumstances - In 2002, the deaths of two marshalls in an accident on the opening day also led to the rally being called off.
