  • Busted nose a small price for Healy's boot

ONE lucky Northern Ireland fan left San Marino with a very special momento.
Newtownards student Scott McCauley, who was among 1,300 vociferous members of the Green and White Army for the World Cup qualifier, was the grateful recipient of one of the most prized assets in international football – David Healy's right boot.

The record-breaking goalscorer brought delirium to travelling fans when he launched his footwear into the away contingent following Northern Ireland's 3-0 victory over the European minnows.

Scott, who is based at Dundee University and is a member of the institution's Northern Ireland supporters' club, revealed he received a bloody nose in the resulting melee, but that it was a wound well worth taking.

"I am actually a goalkeeper at the university and it is probably the first catch I've caught all year," the 20-year-old joked.

Explaining the moments after the game, Scott said: "He (Healy) came over to the crowd and he threw the two boots into our section. I got his right boot – I also got a busted nose but it was good. It was the icing on the cake on a great away trip.

"After the feeling of elation, the next thing I knew blood was pouring down my face."

Despite his valiant efforts, big-hearted Scott revealed he would not be personally keeping the silver-coloured boots.

"I will be giving it to my dad as he could not make it over. My dad will have David Healy's right boot covered in my blood – so it's a unique selling point."

Speaking after the match, Northern Ireland's talisman Healy – who drew a rare blank in front of goal on the night – revealed he had disposed of his footwear as a means of showing his appreciation to the travelling supporters, who had chanted his name continuously throughout the game.

It is thought the boots were worn by the frontman in his previous two games for Sunderland – when he scored two goals – and the corresponding fixture against San Marino at Windsor Park last year, when he was also on the scoresheet.

Another fortunate supporter obtained the left boot but Scott was not too perturbed.

"It's a big thing to get 'Sir' David Healy's right boot that he has scored with for both Sunderland and Northern Ireland," he said.

"I don't know where the left boot went – I was just so focused on trying to keep the right one."

Northern Ireland resume their World Cup campaign against Poland at a sold-out Windsor Park next month.
