The first thing that immediately caught my attention, as the Dirty Rose MySpace page loaded, was the fact that this Scottish power trio will be supporting Gun and Blaze Bayley, in May and June of this year respectively. Not a shabby achievement in itself, seeing as both Gun and Blaze are enjoying quite a resurgence from their earlier glory days.
... then I caught a look at Rose's influences, and an inevitable smile crossed my face.
Ah yes - right then and there, I had the feeling that an old warhorse like myself might like these guys, haha!
Anyway, proceedings on the player kick off with a somewhat 'in your face' track called "Doctor" ...
... And right from the get-go it's an 80's metal timewarp ; in this instance bringing a Saxon/Megadeth inkling to this writer's mind.
This song also offers the best production of the creations on display here, with bassist Alan Clarkson's 'tough' vocals being very reminiscent of the glorious NWOBHM music scene, all those aeons ago. Also, when the lead break kicks in, it's as you'd expect to hear the band in a live environment ; an energetic fretboard workout riding atop the lone rumbling bass and heavily-hit drums ; the bare-bones rawness only adding to the appeal.
No Place To Run", "No Way Back", "Insanity", Waiting To Die" and "Price To Pay" then follow each other, and they crunch and chug along quite nicely - all of them being well executed, as well as hitting a pronounced mid-paced old school Metallica/DiamondHead-esque groove (especially on "Insanity")
Still, in my estimations, when a band is still in its relative infancy, there's nothing wrong with proudly wearing your metal heart on your sleeve ... And whilst the production on these five remaining tracks aren't (to my ears) as 'sonically clear' as the opener, they're still far from difficult to listen to, with every instrument occupying its own space with acceptable force and clarity.
But yes ; if there's to be a critical element to this review, then it probably comes in the form of the dreaded "lack of variation" quote. After a while, all the songs on the player seem to meld into one another, so experimentation with different time signatures and feels will definitely see this band evolve in a very positive manner.
I personally see quite a bit of promise in Dirty Rose. They're already a very tight, cohesive unit, and I'm sure that their obvious conviction and pride in what they play will only enhance what will come for them.
