Residents in the village awakened to the sounds of sirens and were soon devastated to learn that the village school was ablaze.

Fire-fighters tried in vane to save the building but the fire was fierce and it took over two hours to get the blaze under control. The bottom end of the school which includes the gymnasium had been totally ruined.

On the 10th April 2007 planning consent for a new school approved and on Monday 10th September the pupils, teachers, parents and friends took part in a mass dig to mark the beginning of the new school build.

We now look forward to seeing the new village school which is due to open in October 2008!

Border Construction are appealing to kids to stay out of the new school at the weekends and evenings. Border Construction are trying their best to get the new school up and running and all the workmen are trying really hard to get the project back on schedule. Please can parents ensure that they make it clear to children that it is a building site and not a playground.. each time there is damage to the site this sets back the opening date.

Delay for Denholm's new school
The completion of Denholm's new state-of-the-art primary school has been delayed by two months due to the bad winter weather. Contractor Border Construction has informed Scottish Borders Council that the earliest date that the local authority can now take possession of the new building will be September 12, and is "resolute" that this cannot be brought forward. In a letter informing parents that pupils will remain at St Margaret's school until the October break, Glenn Rodger, the council's director of education and lifelong learning, said: "There is no opportunity to bring this date forward without compromising on the quality of the finished school – and that we are not prepared to do." The school, which was destroyed by fire in April 2006, is on budget at £3.1million. Source: HawickNews

PUPILS at Denholm primary began laying the foundations for their future this week when they took part in a mass dig to signal the start of work on their new school. Children, staff and parents were all armed with shovels on Monday to mark the beginning of a new era, following last April's fire which ripped through the school. The school's 96 pupils have been displaced to St Margaret's in temporary classrooms since the blaze – which was caused by a faulty radiator – and Denholm headteacher Jeanette Gordon is delighted that work is now starting. She said: "Since the fire, we have been reflecting on what we lost and it has certainly been a long and challenging journey. "We are very excited that we can finally start to look ahead and we are looking forward to seeing a new, state-of-the-art school start to take shape." The new £4million building will have a range of environmental features including carbon-free ground-source heating and toilets which are flushed with collected rainwater. SOURCE: Hawick News

	Viv some fantastic times back there many years ago, was sad to hear the news of the fire.hope the new school is as good as the old one,and the puplis are still having as much fun, be a shame there wont be a under ground passege anymore to hide in during the day! oh them were the days! best of luck xxx
