  • Q&A with Darren!

    Hi everyone!

We caught up with Darren recently and posted some questions to him about Hell’s Heroes, the end of the Demonata and what’s in store next year. Check out our interview below – enjoy!

The reaction to Hell’s Heroes has been immense - how does it feel knowing the Demonata has come to an end?

It was a relief to make it to the end alive!!! When you start a long series like this, you always know there's a very real possibility that fate might not let you get to the end, and I would have hated to leave readers hanging! The fact that the response has been so enthusiastic is a bonus. My other worry (other than the Grim Reaper making off with me!!) was that the fans wouldn't like the end -- it would have sucked to bring them on such a long, twisting journey, only to let them down at the final hurdle. Thankfully that wasn't the case and Hell's Heroes has been enjoying terrific feedback.

Do you have a favourite moment from the series?

My personal favourite bit is a very minor moment in Book 10. It's when Shark, who has been through an even worse time than most of the others over the course of the series (I think I killed him off at least 3 times!!!), turns up midway through the books, guts just about held in place by a brace and bandages, at death's door, missing several fingers. A dubious Kirilli asks him how he fights demons now -- in answer, he flexes his thumb and growls, "I gouge." That line always makes me smile!!!

Give us some stats on the Hell’s Heroes tour - what was the highlight?

It was my busiest tour yet -- every signing session was at least two hours!! The highlight had to be the mammoth six and a half hours signing at Waterstones Bluewater. I'd done two events there in the past, so I went expecting a good crowd, but this was incredible!!! It was their second longest signing ever at the store -- Jacqueline Wilson was half an hour longer than me -- I'll be gunning for her crown next time!!!!!

There has been a great response to the film on our page – how has it felt to see it finally in cinemas?

Sweet!!! It had been almost ten years since the possibility of a film was first mooted, and I'd got sick of people asking me about it, so it was nice to finally be able to say HERE IT IS!!!! I had nothing to do with the making of the movie, so I was nervous going in, but to my relief I enjoyed it. I've seen it three times now, and have been more impressed with it each time, so hopefully it's one that will continue to pick up good word of mouth over the coming months and years, and grow its own cult following, the same way the books did.

Can you tell us anything about what’s in store in The Thin Executioner next year?

A young boy is shamed in public by his father. To restore his good name, he decides to enter a fiercely contested competition to become the new executioner in his home city. But because he's thin and scrawny, he knows he stands no chance -- so he sets off on a perilous quest to track down a god who has the power to grant people great strength and invincibility. The catch? You have to sacrifice another human in the god's presence. It's a long, dark fantasy novel, inspired by (among other things) Mark Twain's novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and the present-day War in Iraq. I often get asked which of my books is my favourite. To date, I've always been diplomatic and said I love them all equally, the way I would love all of my children equally if I had any. But the truth, of course, is that almost every parent has a favourite child, even if they won't admit to it, and The Thin Executioner is my personal favourite out of all the books that I have so far written.

And finally, there is Twilight fever everywhere at the moment – are you going to see New Moon?? (sorry – but had to ask!)

I haven't seen the first film yet, so no. But Twilight is showing on Sky even as I write this, and I've recorded it, so I'm go
