Labour's NHS cuts continue
Andrew Lansley has condemned new plans to close at least three A&E and maternity units in the East of England.

The closures were announced in Labour's blueprint for the NHS in the East of England, which is the first wave of Lord Darzi's reconfiguration plans for the health system.

Andrew, the Shadow Health Secretary, said the decision to shut down viable and accessible services was "shameful":

"There's no doubt that these changes aren't being driven by local communities; they're coming straight from Whitehall as a direct result of Lord Darzi's big top-down review."

And he stressed:

"We value our local NHS services and don't want to lose them. Labour seem to be getting more and more out-of-touch with that strongly-held feeling."

David and Mayor Bloomberg
Mayor Bloomberg joined David Cameron on a visit to an ARK Academy in London on Friday morning.

After a tour of the school, David gave a speech about the education system in this country.

He stressed that we have "a serious crisis" in our schools and that "enormous improvement" was needed.

He underlined the need to make schools "accountable to parents instead of to politicians" by giving parents the power to remove their children from failing schools and take the per-pupil funding to a new school.

"If all parents can choose schools, instead of schools choosing parents, then failing schools will close, good schools will grow, and standards will rise for everybody - and especially for the least fortunate."

Before visiting the ARK Academy with David, Mayor Bloomberg had met with Boris Johnson to congratulate him on becoming the new Mayor of London.

Wendy Alexander repeats her referendum call
David Cameron has again written to the Prime Minister to clarify who speaks for the Labour Party on the issue of a referendum on Scottish indepedence.

Despite Gordon Brown's claims that "there is nobody seeking legislation at Westminster to have a referendum", Ms. Alexander made the following remarks at First Minister's Questions:

"Will he [Alex Salmond] bring forward a Referendum Bill in next year's legislative programme next week?"

"We believe that the uncertainty is damaging Scotland. I and my colleagues have therefore offered our support to bring this issue forward now".

"We believe that Scotland deserves a choice sooner rather than later".

"I have offered Labour's support for an early referendum"

"Why won't he bring the Bill on?"

"The First Minister tells us that over 80% of Scots want a referendum - so why are we still waiting".

David concluded his second letter by accusing the Prime Minister of being "completely unclear and potentially misleading" in his previous response.

the number of hung councils is down by 3 (from 67 to 64). if anything, its less alarming.

i think it will last. if we look at history, give it three years and cameron will be PM. it'll be an exact repeat of Labour '97 - especially as the credit cruch worsens (as it has in America) and Brown is seen to be even more powerless.

Brown: "The elction results were ... dissapointing ... no, the election results were bad."

I'm Glad to see that the Conservatives have made gains in Wales, But it's alarming at how many hung Councils there are here now. I hope a coalition will do the job sufficiently. I can see the Tories leading them anyway and it's good to see ! I've had enough of Labour here. here, before there was a saying that you could stick a labour sticker on a donkey and it'd get in. But i don't think that this is the case anymore, and that's a good thing. Now it's time for the Conservtives to show us wht they can do in council !:D

A job well done in the local elections! I would have run myself for the Tories if I wasn't at university! Labour will not win the next election - fact. Gordon Brown cannot even unify has own party, please tell me where the leadership is? At least Cameron possesses the flair, the hunger and the passion - we don't see that from Mr Brown. Although the Tories didn't win in Ipswich, our result was plagued by a new Tory County bigwig on a massive salary higher than that of Mr Brown! Never mind - she looks the part!

Good luck with the campaign! And good luck to Boris - I will be watching him with interest!
