The Siege of Tobruk was battle in North Africa over the possession the costal port of Tobruk, held by the Australian and British forces under the command of Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead. The siege started on 10 April 1941, when Tobruk was attacked by the German Afrika Korps and Italian allies under Lieutenant General Erwin Rommel who had rapidly pushed the Australians and British across North Africa. Maintaining control of Tobruk was crucial to the Allied war effort. Tobruk's port was the only one onthe African coast between Tripoli and Alexandria. Had the Allies lost it, the German and Italian supply lines would have been drastically shortened and Cairo would have been exposed to attack. General Archibald Wavell instructed Morshead to hold the fortress for eight weeks. However, his forces defended the town from 240 days, being supplied by the Royal Navy, until they were relieved by the Eighth Army during Operation Crusader. Tobruk marked the first time that the Blitzkrieg of the German Panzers had been successfully brought to a halt. It was also the longest siege in British Imperial military history. Rommel nonetheless captured Tobruk in a new offensive in 1942 after the Battle of Gazala. (more) (less)
