- Hello. My name is Jamie and I really hate filling out "About Me" boxes. So to keep things brief I guess I'll say that I'm a bit of a reclusive nerd who is also very fond of trying to pretend he isn't one. When I'm not studying some form of art, I'm creating my own whether it be in imagery, music or words. Currently I write my own music and play guitar with a band consisting of a couple of friends. I was once a Buddhist for a couple of years, but now prefer a healthy balance of philosophy and drunken silliness. 90% of the time, I won't be taking anything remotely seriously. I believe that if you can't laugh at something, then it really isn't worth crying over. That, with all my bohemian cynicism nonsense and sardonic misanthropy generally sums me up, I guess. I dunno. Neurosis. Add that to the list. Are we done?

Moth
[DOWNLOAD LINK TO SONG IS NEAR BOTTOM OF POST]
Today I had some free time on my hands, and there was no-one around, so I sat down and made my third attempt at making something out of "New Song 1", which came before (by about 5 minutes) Fishing For Crabs With Lumberjacks. In the end I got there, but I went through about three different versions, each getting more and more complex, before ending up with something I'm not 100% happy with, but hey, I'm just glad I did something with it.
Initially the song simply started as a four-chord "oldies" progression with the odd break here and there (which by this final version, I only have one of, near the middle) on acoustic guitar and vocals. I felt like it needed something more however and so I reached for my tuning pipe which sounds like a harmonica but is a lot easier to play (even though it isn't an instrument, I have used it as such before). However, because it's limited to five different pitches, I couldn't quite get a harmony or melody line going quite right. So I thought "what the hell" and grabbed the harmonica which I've been meaning to learn properly for a while now but still haven't got around to it. Luckily, both the harmonica and my song happened to be in the same key (C), so I simply improvised some stuff for ten minutes and then took the best parts in mixing. So yeah, this is my first song with live harmonica, and I couldn't now imagine the song without it.
There's also some piano, bass and drums in there, which makes "Moth" quite a bit more complex than Lumberjacks, and that's not even taking into account the various harmonies and counter-melodies used here. As I say, I don't think it came out quite as perfect as I'd hoped, but there's something grand about the thing that I really like, even if it does sound a little underwhelming vocally.
Again, I'd say without a doubt, the vocals here are the weakest link, and sure, I could have put more work into them, but it's not like I'm recording something professional here--these are just demos and rough layouts for songs that I might pick up in the future should I ever get a chance to record something properly. THEN, I'd really stress over the details and make sure things were perfect, but for now, this will certainly do.
Lyrically, the song is about a guy, who falls in love with a celebrity, film-star or just someone really popular. I tried to make it pretty open-ended in terms of interpretation, but the general idea is that this person is made to feel like a moth, dwarfed by both the person and the feelings that overwhelm them when around that person. Of course, the love will forever be unrequited because of the circumstances of the two people, but the moth doesn't care and repeatedly flies into the light knowing of the consequences from past experience or what have you. It's a little hard to fully explain, which is why I wrote a song for it, but as I say, I tried to make it open to interpretation, because even I didn't fully realise what I had written 'till long after I had recorded the vocal track.
Okay, enough babble for now. This will probably be the last song for a while seeing as I have no batteries for my recorder, am totally skint and have other projects that need finishing, but never say never.

Fishing for Crabs with Lumberjacks
[DOWNLOAD LINK TO SONG IS NEAR BOTTOM OF POST]
So I said I'd probably start a "song blog" at some point, and here it is. First entry, "Fishing for Crabs with Lumberjacks"... that's me with lumberjacks, not crabs with lumberjacks...
Anyway, yesterday I woke up and immediately picked up the acoustic guitar and strummed out four different songs, a couple more defined than others. This, which was number 2, was probably the most finished simply because it's a naturally simple, mellow and chilled sounding song.
After trying to develop number 1 all day however, I gave up. Came back to the songs today and decided to go straight to number 2, writing some lyrics that reflected the song's mood and came up with some melodies to go over the top of the chords. Finished product is essentially four tracks, 2 acoustic guitars and 2 vocals... so could easily be played by two people.
The lyrics reflect my mood at the time which was essentially just feeling out of sync with the world around me. I wanted to go somewhere odd and different, even if it meant being alone and leaving behind everything I have. The crabs and lumberjacks come from a conversation I had with my brother the day before whilst watching a documentary about fishermen. I decided I'd love that kind of job, out of way, hard, exhausting and fulfilling. "Either that, or a lumberjack". I checked online to see if there was anything like that here, but of course there wasn't.
A lot of the lyrics are based on the first draft demo which I recorded as soon as I woke up (after song number one) and some are exactly the same, unchanged from the ad-libbed version. The second verse in particular was all made up on the spot, with the exception of the first line which I consciously went in wanting to say, because of the whole lumberjack, forestry thing. The rest came out naturally and I kept it in.
I've been experimenting with vocal layering, echo effects and stuff like that for a while now, and I'm finding that my voice works a lot better with acoustic accompaniment than with electric. At least, that's what I think, so that's probably the direction I'll be headed for in the future. I still write heavy rockers and such, but whenever I lay down the vocals it usually sounds like bollocks. Not that this is a masterpiece in terms of vocal delivery (I think there are about 3 different notes in the melody throughout) but it ain't so bad.
But yeah, this is a natural progression from works I haven't made available online yet, but if you're at all interested, you'll notice I am trying to form my own sound and it's quite different from much of those Early Demos Otoboke collections I've been making for the past year or so. I might go back and select my favourite songs from the past couple of months and post them on here but I doubt it. I'll probably just save them for one big collection. We'll see.
So here's "Fishing for Crabs with Lumberjacks", which is also my first completed song in about three weeks because I've been busy with other projects and getting drunk. Hopefully more to come in the next couple of weeks, but don't hold your breath.
