• Ron Pollack's Blog About Turtles

As father to five kids, Mimi, my wife and I, always like to keep it educational. Living in Florida, we are on vacation year round, at least we have access to special activities that others travel hundreds of miles to encounter. When our kids were younger, we spent most weekends at our beach house, located on one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches in Florida's North Clearwater Beach. "Turtle Season" was the favorite season to all of us. I know our kids often saw the turtle areas roped off and had questions about the turtles. So I decided to share some of my favorite turtle facts they can pass on to their kids.

-Weighing less than one ounce, hatchlings are only 2 inches long. -As adults they can weigh up to 200 to 300 pounds.

-The nest temperature during incubation determines a sea turtle's sex. -Cold will be a boy. -The warm nests will turn out females.

(Ellen, our neighbor that belongs to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, helps monitor 26 miles of Pinellas County's coast line to help rescue or report nesting for the wild life. The combination of releasing injured and sick turtles back into the wild while ensuring as many hatchlings as possible make it into the Gulf helps protect these species from extinction. cmaquarium.org is a neat way to check them out.)

Now for the Fun Facts! -Florida is home to 80% of Loggerhead turtles on U.S. beaches.

-These turtles return to the same beaches they were hatched to lay their eggs after migrating thousands of miles. -Only when the female lays her eggs do they come ashore.

The turtles make our Florida beach house one of our favorite Ron Pollack family vacation spots.

  • Nathan, One of My Sons; Ron Pollack

I thought I would give my friends an update on my oldest son, Nathan. He spends hours at the barn, and often is there bathing, brushing and lunging his horse and riding it in the ring. There were even some twin fawns he was able to show her. He spent this last summer at the age of 15, in Oregon. I found out that an old neighborhood friend Francesca is in Oregon and staying nearby. She was recounting to her mom the old days when Nathan was six or seven and we would go to our beach house for the weekend, a few blocks from where she grew up. With that part of the beach being so private her mother used to leave their home unlocked, except when Nathan would come to visit. At 6AM, before we knew, he ws off on his bike to her house because he knew he could walk right in and wake them up to play. So, Francesca was excited to see Nathan now that he is grown up. He took her to see "Indian Pony", his gelding horse nicknamed Apache. Eventually he might get the stallion he wants but now he is starting with a gelding.

It was nice to get an update from Oregon! I love our Ron Pollack family updates.

  • My Tennis Blog, by Ron Pollack

Everyone knows that Mimi, my wife and I, truly enjoy a game of tennis. We can truly recommend lessons at McMullen to all our friends now, as I know without a doubt that they will get similar results from learning the sport from Chall Tennis Academy. When I have the time, I am looking forward to picking up a racquet on a regular basis again. My wife comes home a happy player now. (I used to play competitively as a kid, but then tennis took a back seat to investing, to kids and other pursuits.) But I haven't given up on the sport. One of the biggest tennis states is Florida. But through the years, we have often been frustrated -- despite going to fancy tennis camps, and even buying a house with a tennis court. I have still have not had enough time to resurrect my game, but Mimi has been revitalized by Erick Chall, head pro at the McMullen Tennis Center. Erick's technique for teaching tennis is far superior to any Mimi has been exposed to over a number of years of "on again, off again" tennis. Eric’s enthusiasm for the sport is delightfully contagious. Since my son regained interest his game went rom a few lucky shots to an actual tennis player to be reckoned with.

I am now informing everyone of the terrific resources Clearwater now has to offer on my Ron Pollack blog<, http://ronpollack.net/'
