Although their were large battles in Carlow , Kildare , Antrim , and Wexford , without any real French aid the United Men one by one fell to the British government . Tone was captured and sentenced to death by hanging . In his death cell he took a piece of glass and slit his throat . The glass was not sharp enough and it took him many days of agony to bleed to death
