In April 1986, the founders located the building @ 924 Gilman Street + signed a lease. In the following months, the founders, including Tim Yohannon of Maximum Rocknroll, held weekly organizational meetings and posted flyers to increase involvement. On December 31, 1986, the club held its 1st show. Since then, 924 Gilman Street has been 1 of the longest-running independent music venues in the United States. A 924 Gilman Street member (which is anyone who buys a $2-per-year membership card), has the ability to make decisions + work for the improvement of the club as a whole. Membership meetings occur at 5pm on the 1st + 3rd Saturdays of each month. There are 3 main rules for patrons: No drugs, No alcohol, No violence. Gilman showcases mostly punk rock. Some of the most influential bands that have played @ Gilman include: Bad Religion, Green Day, Isocracy, Mr. T Experience, NOFX, The Offspring, Operation Ivy, Rancid + Screeching Weasel!

      Punk is about being who you want to be, not what others want you to be! Its about being your own person, and this is one of the only places in today's society where shit lyk that is accepted! Its one of the coolest places you could be, and its your loss if you can't see that!
      And because it was and is such an important place to people, thay didn't want to do anything that would risk closing it down! The stage-diving thing is for personal safety, and insurance reasons!
